Have you repeated the test?
Have you tried different speed testers?

A one-off speed test means little as high contention (either on your line or even at the speedtester itself) can produce results that vary wildly on a timescale of seconds.

From 6Mbps to sub 1Mbps is still one hell of a variation. If a real difference then there is something seriously out of kilter with your PC. Some of the TCP setting could be out on XP or earlier versions of Windows but from Vista on they are supposed to be self tuning.

Is your PC generally a bit of a klunker?

It certainly doesn't seem like an issue with the hardware up to the point the ethernet cable hits your PC. As said earlier, you mate was getting 6Mb.

That means it's got to be something in the PC itself that's causing the problem. Do you use any Torrent programmes? They initially install themselves to start on system startup, which means that it will run in the background whether or not you like it.

Might be wortwhile starting with a HJT log to see what's running. Much easier to help you then.

Download HijackThis from http://www.hijackthis.de/en and once you install it, update it andrun a scan. Post the log page back here.

Have windows XP home edition SP2 ....

And YEAH - think PC bit of a 'klunker' but would appreciate any advice if i could speed things up and get a few more months out of it.....

With XP giving a TCP Optmiser a try may bring forth some improvement. TBH I've never had an improvement from one of these but I've seen claims in forums that other folks have had an improvement - with WiFi sometimes a spectacular one.

I'm no expert either but it looks from the log that both Kaspersky and Norton (Symantec) are running. That's often quoted on here as being one of the main causes of slow running PC's.

Have now ran the Norton removal tool but restarted computer but it hasnt improved the speed.
