Like most responders I'm not in favour of having "certified posters" and really don't see how it could be handled even if I were.
That said I don't think the attacks on the original poster are justified or in the ethos of the board either - seeing some poor advice followed was the stated reason for making the suggestion and I'm quite prepared to accept that because some advice I've seen given is pretty poor (imo at least). That said most that is downright wrong or dangerous usually gets challenged along the way.0 -
All I am suggesting is that questions would be answered with more focus and far less detracting posts or arguments.
Gee, almost as bad as the eBay community boards then.0 -
I have read posts on here that in general have some good solutions for people. Then they seem to lose their path because people didnt read the problem correctly.
Thats all very good Altahost but what makes you assume that that will not happen on your post's.Forum spellcheckers are the pitts.0 -
I know! Let's make this a 'sticky'!

You don't have to go to a mechanic. There's nothing preventing you from talking to somebody about whatever problems you are having with your car and then being told what needs to be done to rectify it. Whether you're confident or skilled enough is another matter, if not, that's when you've got to pay somebody else to do it for you. No different to fixing many other things you'll find around the house.
You don't have to be qualified in something to be good at it. I find that out every evening in the kitchen.
If it’s an attempt to instigate some kind of bragging contest then that’s most definitely not in the ethos of the board and isn’t going to help anyone
Everyone make mistakes, fortunately this forum is quite active which has the benefit that those mistakes are usually corrected pretty quickly. I don't see why anyone should have to justify themselves with their qualifications, it's very much against the ethos of having a community of computer enthusiasts. In fact, one of the many benefits often cited with trying Ubuntu as an alternative to Windows is the community support available.
Hi there and thanks for your feedback. Here is a point that is for me a problem. During this thread I have continually mentioned focus. Your points have been made at least twice on this thread so I see no need for the same answer being posted again all be it in different words.
The point about experienced "unqualified" IT people is very valid and in reality seems to be the only stumbling block here. These people are just as good and in some cases better than qualified. I don't doubt that.
Also, these names are known on this forum and surely the other forum members would put that forward. I think the essense of the initial question is being mixed up a little. I am not offering judgement on anybody here.
You mentioned the community spirit of the open source communities and once again I agree. But take a look at oscommerce now. It's falling with it's own weight because too much individual demand from the system has cause the overdevelopment of what in theory is brilliant.
When all said and done this was just a question. The quest has been answered. The answer seems to be:
The British people would rather place their trust in free unqualified assistance then free qualified assistance. When all the niceties are removed, this is the result.Computers are like me, I get up in the morning and work...until I stop.0 -
To the original poster, if you want professional advice then you a very welcome pay me the £650+ per day that my clients pay. If you want free advice, offered as and when I feel able / inclined / qualified to offer it then take it as it comes and treat it as you should all other posts - by not taking my word as absolute gospel and by making sure you consider the opinions of others offering free advice.0

This has happened to anyone who has posted on threads. I know that, its one of the reasons I posted the question so I am not sure I understand your point here.Computers are like me, I get up in the morning and work...until I stop.0 -

All ready been said several times through the thread. Also already understood before the original question being posted.
So options
Free unqualified support ?
or
Free qualified support?
Like I mentioned before, if it were medical I know which one you'd be askingComputers are like me, I get up in the morning and work...until I stop.0 -

But would the "free" qualified assistance be free?
I asked you this question already, your business already offers a paid service would you offer it to this board for free then?0
