Aaaanyway, I happened to walk into the kitchen mid-afternoon to see one of our cats jumping from surface to windowsill. Thought nothing of it (I never learn!!!). Greeted her with "hey pusskin" and she turned to face me, the picture of innocence, with crumbs on her whiskers!!! Ruddy cat!!!!!

    ok...now i am panicking!!!!!
hubby: "are you going to make a christmas cake?"
me: "I'm not bl**dy Delia you know!"
hubby: "awww I though a small one in one of those trays with marzipan and icing on the top only would be nice...you know like the slab ones you can get in Tescos?"
    me: "then go to Tescos!"

....anyhoo, as you all know i'm not a good cook and have NEVER made an xmas cake..my Gran normally makes everyone one but shes just turned 89 years old and she doesn't have the strength to be stirring cake mixes like Nigella!
I would like to make one (and one for my Gran) and I have a 28cm rectangle tin thingy that I use for tray bakes...any idea of recipes...cooking times? do i just know it's cooked when a skewer comes out clean? Do I have enough time to even make a cake this close to xmas?
sorry...i'm usless at all this stuff!

    I've been Money Tipped!
Made some more banana muffins  but used the recipe from the Takeaway Secret book.

Seemed a bit stange making them without milk, not sifting the flour or whisking the egg but they came out fine, really spongey.

    ;)

ok found my Nigella book which has a xmas cake recipe and also different amounts for different size square or round tins..... my tin is only little but it shows it as the largest cake mix amount? Maybe because it is meant to be deeper but I only want a shallow one.
I think i'm gonna have to just buy a load of ingriedients, chuck em in the tin and hope for the best!!!

That reminds me,I must get organised to make a Christmas Cake.

Are you looking at the Nigella recipes on page 248 in How To Be A Domestic Goddess ?You're saying that your smallest tin holds a 25.5cm round or 23cm square cake?I don't think you can go far wrong if you follow the instructions.Famous last words....
I've got a few recipes in different books, not sure which one or which size cake I'll do.I think I'll do a small one.
If you do the cake in the next few weeks, you'll have loads of time to 'doctor' it.

One cake that I dream of making BTW is Black Bun.Has anyone made this?My Mum made it once,I was so impressed at her skill and it was,of course, delicious.I'm not even sure that I've got a black bun recipe.

    Happy baking!

Hi Bananadog- why dont you borrow some cake tins and then if you like it you can buy some of your own. Using the wrong tin is likely to invite disaster and discourage you. Plus the ingredients are too expensive to just chuck out.

    Hi
I do have a proper tin for large cakes but wanted to make a thin slice one that can be cut into fingers because the kids only like a little bit and hubby isn't allowed a big piece cos he's diabetic.
I found the recipe now but i'll have to keep a close eye on how long to cook it for....wish me luck!!!;)
This is the sort of thing i wanna make...
