Me4bargains - wellcome from me too. I always drive to work dos and use that as excuse. When we had xmas lunch my excuse was that I still had work to do - which I did and also then did need to drive afterwards.
Funny you should say that because when our office was relocated to a building that had no parking facilities and my company offered topay 75% of my travelling costs I got rid of my clapped out banger.
Thats when my drinking really accelerated in the week as I was no longer driving to see clients.
I've been toying with the idea of buying a new car with my other half mainly for the weekends.
I really think that's a goos idea now because I would NEVER drink and drive.
Third time lucky on WW I hope :j

What do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.

I am not AF today. I was drinking vodka and tonic at 1.30 today. I don't know what is wrong with me at the moment. I feel like I should leave this thread because I am being pointless. I can't understand why I ended up like this.:( Sorry to be so down.:o

I don't know about you 115k but I am alcoholic.
Why I ended up alcoholic I don't know - though I believe it is an illness, and some people get this illness. And that's that.
Alcoholics want to drink - that's what alcoholics do. The seek an alcoholic solution to life's problems.

It is not pointless you being on here. It helps us all reading people's struggles (and the good stuff).
Though if this thread is not working for YOU, then potentially try something else as well. You owe the people on this thread nothing. We want what is best for you

I do have dual diagnosis with severe depression and alcoholism. I am just not sure what anyone else can do for me. I still don't want to give up drinking completely. I think I should pester my local services more.:( I just worry that I shouldn't be on this thread as I know other people on here aren't like me.

You seem like a lovely person HB.:A

    That's not surprising.
I know for me, when I eventually got help for my drinking, I didn't want to give up. I just wanted help to cut down to 'normal' levels of drinking
I am alcoholic - giving up is the last thing my alcoholism wants - it tells me that by giving up I cannot have any more fun, life will be unbearable, I will have no social life etc
However, I am glad to say it is the best thing I have ever done. I was bent out of shape for so many years. Stopping drinking and changing my life has helped me get happy, and has removed a lot of the fear from my life.

I'm not sure that anyone is born an alcoholic. Mind you, I have no experience of growing up in that environment so it may be easy for me to say. I believe you have a choice &, knowing how you don't want to be, maybe could help you to keep focused. I hope your local group can help too :)

I believe I was born alcoholic - I didn't drink to excess, every day, but I had the feelings and thinking of an alcoholic from an early age. The fears, anxiety, desire to change the way I was feeling, the unease, self-loathing, etc

I come from a non-alcoholic background (alcoholics are much more likely to come from families with alcoholism), but I have alcoholism. I can do 2 things about it:
    a) Nothing
    b) Something

If I choose option a , then nothing changes apart from things will gradually get worse.
I chose option a for a long long time
Eventually when the hope had gone and I knew I couldn't beat alcohol by myself, I got help for it. That was doing option b.
I wish I did it earlier, but the fact I am doing something for my alcoholism now is good enough.

I don't believe you have a choice of being alcoholic or not - you have a choice whether to do something about it however.
If it was a simple choice to make, I am sure there would be no alcoholics in the world. And this thread wouldn't exist.
Just my point of view, and this applies to me only

Thank you everyone for being so friendly.
Its so refreshing to know there are people out there who are doing the same as me.
However, my parents came around for dinner and my father brought with him a bottle of my favourite wine.
I had a large glass during our meal and now I'm back to tonic water and this may sound silly but I'm glad I did have a glass.
With me a open bottle is an empty bottle but not tonight.
My head is still throbbing but thanks to you guys telling me, I now knowi it's because I've been on the lash too much which has made me realise how much my body has been abused.
My face is also full of spots and I'm guessing it's the toxins having an opportunity to escape!!
One of my biggest hurdles is work.
I have to take clients out a lot, lunchtime is fine but I'm dreading it in the evening.
I've already been asked if I was expecting last week when I turned down a drink!
I might tell people I'm on anti-biotics this week.
How do other people deal with situations like this?

    Good post and welcome.
I know for me, my body was regularly full of alcohol (I would binge drink and do night on, night off, etc) , so when I stopped drinking, I stated listening to my body (because there was no alcohol drowning it out)
And my body told me it was knackered!! My skin, eyes, health all improved dramatically within weeks of putting down the drink.
Many people pay fortunes on skin care treatment - stopping drinking can make you glow!!

I have a job with a degree of client entertaining.
I buy them drinks and stick to softies. I tell them I don't drink. And that's that. If pushed, I say I used to drink, but feel much better when alcohol free.
It is none of their business in any case.
You need to do it a few times and then you realise how easy it is.
I thought it would be impossible, but it isn't.

    Hi everybody :j

11 for me please Shaggy, thanks

I've been doing very badly this weekend, drank far too much wine on both Friday and Sat. I've been feeling really fed up with my job - covering maternity leave, I still don't know when the lady is coming back. Then the usual stress at home with my family. But drinking really makes things worse - I was being so sensible for a few months, but I've really gone backwards. So I'm feeling paranoid today.

The more I drank, the more paranoid I used to get.
Stopping drinking stopped a lot of the paranoia

I know for me, I could have periods where I drank less than normal. However after a few weeks or months, I'd be drinking more than ever. My alcoholism was progressing very gradually. It was difficult to see over a small time frame
