The giving up/cutting down alcohol thread part VI

Not everyone on the thread thinks that MOD, me included. Personally I just want to cut down, break the habit of daily drinking and thanks to this thread I have. Occasionally we have debates (insert rolls eyes smiley) which verge on if you're not prepared to admit to being an alcoholic then please leave the room... But I haven't left yet:p
Hi MissP, I'm off to Edinburgh for a few days. Never been before and would welcome any must do/see/eat ideas.
The joy of this thread is that we have differing opinions, and are respectful of others. Because the human condition is infinitely complex, there is no right or wrong. It is a case of "I believe..."
I THINK
Not everyone on this thread is an alcoholic.
Some are and admit it
Some are not and think they are
Some are and don't admit it
Some are not and think they are not
However, I think alcoholism is a disease, but NOT EVERYONE ON HERE HAS THIS DISEASE.
Cutting down is an achievement too, and the people who have managed to do that successfully and are happy about it are to be applauded.
I read something recently which I am not sure if it is true or not
"If you find you have to really control it, then it is probably out of control"0 -
Thanks Graeme,
I will. The one thing I know is true is that I do have drink issues. I have discussed this with my partner who quickly dismisses my negative thoughts. I sometimes believe it is because she's fond of a night or two on it every week. In a way, addressing our debts may lead to the both of us addressing our drinking. I am not happy with the levels she drinks at, you all know I have my own issues, but being in debt and haing to address it will cause us not to drink, for a while at least. I keep telling my wife I want to give up drinking but that it's very hard to address if she keeps drinking. She, quite rightly, suggests it's selfish of me to ask her to do it as well. But if I am to do this, I recognise whilst I have to do it myself, it will be much easier if my loved ones are on board as well.
One thing that has come to the surface this week, as all I have been thinking about is my situation, both financial and personal, is that I may have an addictive personality. I am really strong on my own, I can handle not drinking, not smoking, but strugle when I am around people who do. Not so much smoking nowadays.
I also note, that if you tell people, I am not doing this anymore, and they continue to do it, they'll mostly, always offer you the one thing that you, whilst may want, don't need to move forward.
I am a work in progress and I am really pleased I ahve found this forum. Thanks for all your help, kind words and, ultimately, guidance.
I am self employed, as such. I worked out last night, that last year, alone, I have lost over £5000 through taking time off work through hangovers...Looking for a fresh start without credit.0 -
Morning all and welcome to those who have just joined

I gave up smoking last year which is apparently my other 'thing'....He said that I didn't drink a lot, that I only drank once a week and I said yes but when I did it was well over my weekly limit and he scoffed at this, didn't think it was a big deal.
Lilith I can relate to this so much....for the last 12 years me and hubby's relationship has revolved around drinking. Now I just don't want to do it anymore. When I first started to cut back he would try and persuade me to have just one, and I think he found it hard to deal with but I really do think that it is because it reminds him that he is drinking too much! He has a very stressful job and alcohol is his way of unwinding, mind you due to my nagginghe does now have at least 2 nights off the booze during the week. I just wish he could see that a bottle of wine a night (often more) is not the answer. I did worry at first we would end up with nothing in common but gradually it is getting easier and feels more "normal" to sit watching tv with a cup of tea rather than a glass of wine.
When I go out with friends I still have a tendency to go mad. I am not sure how to deal with that one yet, have always envied and still envy the person that holds on to one glass ow wine and makes it last all night, to be honest I find excuses not to go out now because it is easier.
I really do feel a lot better for cutting down, I have more energy, and most definately less moody and irritable. I still have weak nights when i just have to give in the crave but I am definately drinking less than ever and this is because I just feel so much hapier and healthier!

ETA - Marru I'm always the same about meeting the teacher - I know I'm a parent but I'm sure she sees right through me and I feel about 6 - I tend to dress up, do my hair etc and feel a bit more of a 'growd-up' -
I
Fay- that made me chuckle, I though it was just me who felt intimidated by the kids teachers. I confess I spend longer getting ready when I go and see the teacher, than when I'm going out with my friends0 -
