We've been learning all about routers, switches and the media used to send the data and they never really went into servers just that they were pc's but bigger beasts.

I played with a server before but it had 4-6 hot swap HD's installed but I have no idea where to get one from. Dabs.Com have some but I can't see one with the spec needed.

I'm pulling what hair I have left out lol...

I don't have to make the system work so I'm not worried about that just trying to source the components of the network.

Any help is much appreciated.

So your learning routers and switches but not servers as alot of the time there in there at the top with say a domain controller and a dhcp server installed.

Are you actually going to be buying anything or do you just need to show for your course that you would know how and where to buy a server of the required spec?

I have a web server running 24/7 in my room - its just an old 3Ghz computer running a Linux operating system. If I wanted hot swappable hard disks I would just add a raid card. If I wanted to add a second network card, I could...
• I've got to show which hardware im using and what model numbers etc and reference everything.

So you are not ACTUALLY installing a server ... you are just having to SPECIFY something for a college project by the sound of it ?

But you don't seem to have a clue what you are talking about ...

Sounds like hes got a network specification plan and hes/she gotta come up with the best equipment etc to use.
• I've got plans for an academic building and have to set up a network for it, we've got to write about how the OSI 7 layer influenced the design etc etc... its a ccna course i'm doing and this is my first assignment.

[Posts crossed] @ OP Don't forget Layer 8 ;)
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(

For those seeking more detailed advice and guidance regarding small claims cases arising from private parking issues I recommend that you visit the Private Parking forum on PePiPoo.com

Hi Guys and Girls,

I need to source a server for a project of mine and have no idea where i get one from.
The spec is below but all the ones I find don't come with hard drives installed.

2x dual core (quad if possible) processors
4 GB memory
RAID Card with min 512Mb memory
4 disks (2 mirrored to use for the OS install and any other applications min - 32Gb, 2 for the file storage – as big as can be afforded). If possible get SAS disks rather than SCSI or SATA
2 GB network cards that can be teams to both load balance and as redundancy

Ebuyer. But your best bet is to get a big hard drive, slap it in a decent machine with lots of RAM. Try using Windows 7 Pro 64bit as it can see more than 3GB then where as XP Pro will really only see upto 3GB even if you have 4.

Then get the trial copy of VMWare Workstation and use your copy of server 2003 or get the trial copy of server 2008 from Microsofts site (do a search). Then use XP or get the trial copy of Windows 7.

You can then setup your 90 machine network all on one machine. Legally if you use your licensed copy of XP or server 2003, for every virtual machine you need a new licence. This is too costly so just using the trial versions is the way to get around that to be within the licence law.

VMWare Workstation 7 works great and now supports Aero :)

A 2.93 GHz dual quad-core Intel Xeon model with 48 GB of RAM, 6 TB of HDD space, an Xserve RAID card, a Dual-channel Gigabit Ethernet card, Quad-channel 4Gb Fibre Channel card, a Promise VTrak E-Class 16x 450 GB SAS RAID subsystem, and Dual 750W Power Supplies, is only £28,164.

If you want support, the Alliance level of Mac OS X Server Software Support costs an additional £40,699, bringing the total to £68,863.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
