A massive mistake has been made, not by removing the smileys, but the condescending and patronising posts made about it by staff.
Many months ago Martin promised that they would come down hard on people who cause trouble. If they followed through on their promises then we wouldn't have this situation today.
Abuse in reported posts is quite often subjective, I don't think anyone will disagree with that, but when abuse@ don't take any action for what is sometimes days, it makes people wonder why they bothered reporting it and means they are less likely to do so again. All the while the argument the reported post is about escalates often in multiple threads.
The 'I can't have moderators' is a bit of a cop out. There are far larger sites than this (both UK and worldwide) which manage perfectly well - if lawyers have told you otherwise then you need a new lawyer; unless the issue is related to the structure and name of the company - both of which are easily changeable.0 -
A couple of things.
First of all, yes, it's great to encourage newbies.
However, I would expect that many of the "newbies" who get an agressive response are actually AEs or trolls.
The abuse team, not having a relationship with the boards, probably find this harder to spot than the regulars.
They then report posts, mostly to antagonize further.
Secondly, the newbies are usually confused and in need of help. Usually it is the regulars who help them.
The only people who will realise that the smilies have gone, and understand the reasons why are the regulars.
You've just alienated the helpers on behalf of the helpees. How many people are getting sick of being treated like children when actually abusive posts stay up for days?
I've recently left my favourite part of the site becasue it has become a cesspool of racist and hateful posts. (okay, it's not actually moneysaving, so I'm not "helping" anyone there, but it makes me less likely to stick around)
Another thing I don't think you have considered is that some of these smilie sites where people are getting there replacements from are riddled with viruses, malware, spyware and all sorts of nasties.
Anyway, I know it won't change your mind, but I feel better for having said my piece. This is my opinion. There are many others like it but this is mine:kisses2: Fiancee of the "lovely" DaveAshton :kisses2:I am a professional ebay seller. I work hard at my job, I love my job, if you think it's silly that's your problem not mine.0 -
There are too many silly rules that other large sites don't have. First the word !!!!!phile was banned and now it's the confused and rolling eyes smilies. What is next?! I'm anti censorship but it's obvious MSE needs some moderators who can delete dodgy posts and make sure the forum runs smoothly.0
