I know nothing about talking in public but I know that I like to see lots of pictures with little talking so if it was me listening I'd want 20 pictures with 2 to 3 mins talk - 2 mins is still along time to talk about 1 pic - there, thats my 2 pennies worth, if I was nearer you [no idea where you are] I'd come and listen

BTW I'm having a little drinky hehe

Thanks Helen, that's very helpful - I'll go for more pictures.

  • My last job was as a presenter/workshop facilitator - if you're comfortable speaking in public then you're 90% there :) Three tips I was given that worked were:

    1. Remember, you know more than they do about your subject, therefore they will find you interesting
    2. If anyone asks you something you don't know, don't get flustered. Act like it's a really interesting question that you've never heard before - that way they feel clever and you're off the hook :D
    3. Smile, sound upbeat and look at them - nothing worse than a presenter who looks glum, sounds glum and stares intently at the powerpoint/flip chart

Good luck hon, you'll be great

    Decision to be made..

OH and I have been invited to a fancy dress party in 2 weeks.. musicals theme.. OH is after wearing his suit and going 'Chicago style'.. so not wanting to be laughed at (I'd happily go as Sandy before the diet) I was thinking.. as Chicago is '20's time setting I think.. would it be appropriate to go in flapper-esque dress??? I'm telling him I'm going as Dorothy from Wizard of Oz or Giselle in a HUUUUUUUGE wedding dress PMSL!
I think flapperesque sounds good. Do you think it would be possible to dye one of the kids boas, my DD has a lilac and a pink one
Have just checked out the price to change my name on my passport - bloomin heck - not bothering - I haven't nearly £80 and I'm not going on holiday so thats that, now to check about my driving licence.................... well I've just changed my address online [free] so when the new licence comes through then I'll change my name.
    Helen x
 I need to change mine and as I've only had the passport about 18 months DH wont be happy if I l keep exH name on there for another 8 years as that would be 20 since divorce :rotfl:

soappie - I think 20 slides with 2 mins each, you can cover more possibly that way

Ok so what have I done

DD's friend has been relocated back to hers along with a nice big cardboard box that I needed to put out for recycling but hadnt got around to.
Booked April long weeked for the grand sum of £31, need to reply to the wedding invite now
    Cooked and decluttered tea

Now need to move some of the washing to where it should be and clean the kitchen and then I will tackle something in the bedroom I think. Back later mebbe
Mortgage, we're getting there with the end in sight £6587 07/23, otherwise free of the debt thanks to MSE help!

    Eeeek

What have I done? I've only just agreed to do TWO talks on the history of my town. I must be mad in my exhaustion....

    Eeeek

Two very different organisations - one a small group of elderly women pensioners, another a much larger group of people of a wide age range.

Both want me to do about 45 minutes worth!

First one is in the middle of March. The other is in June.

Given the localities and the nature of the audience, I can't really present the same thing. The first one will be better if it's really local to the area given the nature of the audience. The other would be better to be more broad.

Trust me to open my big mouth when discussing my local history passion at cordons at a fire scene!

Anyone done this sort of thing before and can give me pointers? I am accustomed to public speaking, but usually of a v. short and succinct 5 mins worth at the town hall!

ETA - the pointers I need are things like how many slides are generally needed 45 minutes? Do I create 10 slides and talk on each one for about 4 minutes, or do I do 20 slides and talk on each one for two minutes?

    HELP!!!!
Think of it as marketing opportunities for your book.

    Deep breath...

This is all part of what I do for a living... roughly 18 slides... plus a title slide.

Slide one - your big idea/why they should listen - get their attention
Slide 2 - the main points you'll be covering - go for three or four main points, with about four slides on each
Then a couple of slides to wrap up.

Five minutes per slide usually works out about right

Don't put what you're saying on the slide. That goes in the notes pages. Interesting stuff which you may or may not refer to directly goes on the slides. Nothing smaller than 16 point. Max 8 bullets per slide (probably less given the audience - 5 should do it) and max 8 words per bullet

Can I come and watch? :D

boa.jpg?t=1264276478erm - it's still waiting to be used!
it was my sisters, it's NEW and it still has tags and price (£15.00 ) (M&S;))
it's Lilac and it didn't sell on flea bay.. would you like it?

just bought some Seville oranges from Mr S as Mr M doesn't sell them...I toook DD with me in case I had to go to the new, massive Mr T which I am deliberately avoiding. DD has been and knows the system - conveyor blets and all...but I have been reprieved...
ETA has added pic *preens self*

Saffstar - thankyou! that's invaluable advice

Kazm - thankyou for confirming Helen's advice

Greenbee - thank you too - I must remember to do an introduction first then follow through on the points made in the intro and then wrap up - and you're welcome to come and watch if you wish :D

I am also aware both would be excellent marketing opportunities. The one one in March, given they're all old ladies who have lived in the area for years, may also give rise to another book born from getting them to talk about their memories of the area :D Funnily enough, that's the one I'm more nervous about. I don't know them, whereas the one in June will have an audience a lot of whom I've known for years and I'll be v. comfortable.

I have surpassed myself with a fridge bottom Soappie Surprise dinner. I have a mediterrean corned beef hash heating itself up in the oven. It smells gorgeous!

Soappie I'd do the slides then talk, you'll be amazed how little you can fit in. Always giving time for appropriate questions of course. Start with the 10 slides if you feel more comfortable but with history I'd say more pictures the better too, 20 sounds great.
sexymouse eucalyptus oil works VERY well on mould/mildew if you want something natural, bleach/pre made mould spray if you want something with a chemical kick

A squidge stressed, took my mind off money troubles that my Dad has been taken into hospital. Well no because it makes getting to see him harder but realising more what is important. He's been taken in with gall stones, infection and poor liver function....unfortunately something I know a lot about as been there myself, he'll be being a nightmare patient I know it. He's hooked up to ABs and fluids at the mo, his fiancee just rang to say he doesn't want fuss but he said that when he had his heart attack. Ward even phoned us then to say please take him home as he was driving them potty setting up patients unions etc...OK calm....he'll be fine I am sure....just wish he had not moved as the hospitals 50 miles away. Some get better soon and don't drive the nurses barmy vibes would be appreciated.

Done kitchen, again. DP did the living room. Been shopping.

Going to let the boys play along on 'In it to win it' as DS1 loves answering so we're using the buttons ... until it's like the last non multiple choice so he's yelling Dr Who at the tele :rotfl:
One day I might be more organised...........
