Has the locksmith fitted our lock wrong?!

Yep, do a search for "ABS Avocet" on google videos. Assuming they fitted the lock the right way round, then you can make your own decision as to whether you've been done or not. Possibly they should have fitted one 5mm shorter (the recommendation is that the protrusion is 5mm or less), but you've probably got one of the better locks on the market installed, from what I understand. (And, given the design of that particular lock, it makes no significant difference that another 5mm is sticking out - it will still snap at the same place.)Jplocksmiths wrote: »Search you tube for lock snapping and its not hard to see why this is now one of the fravorite ways that burglers gain enrty to your home.
Caveat: I am not a locksmith!
I'm just in the process of trying to find a set of locks for my newly installed doors, so researching how easy all the various types of locks are to break... depressing stuff. The ABS Avocet is currently at the top of my list to buy, but I'm still looking
- I'd be interested to hear from the professionals whether they think it lives up to the hype...?
Oh, and the lock is anti-bump. Google "Avocet ABS" and have a look at the manufacturer's web-site.0 -
Hi
I am Joint Managing Director for Avocet Hardware and was co designer of this lock.
From your pictures it appears the lock protrudes approximately 4 to 5mm. The locks are made in 5mm increments so it may be the ideal size.
All other snap safe cylinders on the market try to stop you snapping thier lock, we believe due to the possible force generated either by mole grips or a lump hammer it is vitually impossible to stop you snapping a lock.
So we developed a product that guarantees it always snaps in the optimal place and secures the internal cam locked inside the lockcase.
This way the attacker cannot gain access to the lock mechanism. as the cam remains in place it also means the lock is still operable from the inside.
Therefore it does not matter that the lock protrudes slightly as this has no effect on security resistance.
We also developed this product as a retro-fit product to enable the householder to have greatly enhanced security easily and quickly with no additional preparation or security devices required.
These locks have been fitted since december 2009 and west yorkshire police have had their first two thwarted break in attempts.
If anyone requires any further information please ask.

Well you can't say fairer than that! Lock technology appears to have been thought about over the last couple of years or so.
There have been a couple of recent break ins near us - although the locks were standard chocolate Euro, the !!!!!!s took a rear window out by snapping the hinges.
I bought a 'Patterson Lock' a while ago which was a different design but the web site seems to have disappeared pattersonlock.co.uk - anyone else had experiences with these?

@ JPLocksmiths.
I'd be grateful if you could clear up the confusion in my mind in respect of Post #27. Thanks.

The Lock MUST NOT protruding more than 3mm
if it dose it can be snaped.0 -

i'm not sure what confusion you have in YOUR mind but if a thief sees a lock hanging out of a handle they will probably have a go at snapping it! regardless of it being snap safe or not they dont't know on the whole till they have a go. And ok your snap safe lock will stop/slow them down getting to your door internals, would it not be more prudent to have a lock correctly fitted and let them move on?
And in all fairness the OP said there lock was hanging out 8mm but looking at the photo I would say that it is no more than 5mm.0 -

And if it doesn't stick out, they'll rip off the handle first, and then have more than 5mm to play with... yes?
Or am I missing something? If I'm a thief wandering round a house with something that can break a cylinder, I suspect I'd have a go at the handle and not just give up because of a 3mm protrusion... but maybe that's just me.0 -
The confusion I have in MY mind was caused by YOUR equivocal post. I politely asked you to help dispel that confusion. If you don't want to address my questions then thats fine. You only have to say so and I'll form my own conclusions. Its post #27 once again. Thanks.Jplocksmiths wrote: »i'm not sure what confusion you have in YOUR mind but if a thief sees.......
