I sit at home every night too. I go out drinking once maybe twice a month and thats after i have got drunk in my house. and i have the confidence too walk into town and pubs but my friends tend to go to the bar and pay for me. I wont socialise with people i dont know. I will just sit with my friends as there is only usually 3 of us.

I understand the benefits system wont understand so thats why i havent said anything too them. Just i have been on benefits 10months now and their really on my case forcing me into all these people jobs like receptionist...and i cant face too answer my own mobile phone let alone a work phone that rings allday and people walking in and asking questions or complaining. I tried too tackle working in a hair salon i tried 3 different ones but in the end realised it was me and people not being able too talk too them.

Sorry Jemma, I wasn't criticizing you for trying to enjoy yourself, just very envious if anything.

I think you need to speak to your doctor and get some medication (if necessary) and therapy sorted out. This will also give you evidence to take to the Benefits Agency which will support the fact that you are trying to help yourself out of the situation you are experiencing.

Unfortunately I don't have any answers for if I did, I would not be in a similar situation - but if you can, keep fighting and don't retreat into yourself as this will only make you worse in the months/years ahead... and that advice is from experience!

When I was unemployed I laid all my cards on the table and spoke honestly about my limitations, may be I had a considerate advisor but she referred me to the DEA (Disability Employment Advisor) and restrictions were placed on my availability and also the type of jobs I could undertake, which took the strain off a little bit.

You do have the right to speak to a DEA though, so ask to speak to one of these directly once you have your supporting evidence from the Doctor.

Trying to mask or hide your fears only makes you feel worse. I have met a few 'sadistic' advisers who gain joy by seeing you squirm.

Don't forget they have targets and also get bonuses for finding people work... that is their main incentive (at least for most).

Go to the interview and if you feel the need to, be honest and tell them your fears rather than bottling them. If they are considerate employers, they will not judge you on this anyway. I got my current job by volunteering, and they knew of my situation before offering me a role within the charity I now work for.

Once you are assessed by the DEA there is much more support on offer, even financial assistance for any prospective employer where your wages are subsidised for a certain period for both you and your employer to assess if the job is suitable.

  • you ever thought of working for a web-based support system? Since you don't have to answer phones, just provide support via email/ticket system...
