I have the Mirena coil and it's brilliant!

I haven't put on any weight, no periods and no remembering to take a pill. It was uncomfortable to put in, but no worse than a smear. I had a bit of period type cramping and then nothing.

Best thing is it can stay in for 5 years!!

I'm 39 and have tried the pill, mini pill and conventional coil over the years, but I have to say the Mirena has been the best and easiest on a day to day basis.

I was on Cilest for years and got on fine with it. Then I got a blood clot (almost certainly for unrelated reasons) and wasn't allowed to take the combined pill any more, so I went on Cerazette. Didn't get on so well with that - moody and tired - so now I'm on Implanon which is a progestogen-only implant. So far (about a year) it has been absolutely fine and I've had no periods and no side effects at all. Having it put in was fine, not much different from getting a flu jab - I had a bruise for a day or two.

Different people seem to react in different ways to all these things so be prepared to try more than one.

Thats what they told me when I first asked about depo becuase my sister has osteoporsis midly - its bone density loss thats the problem with depo. They had a whole leaflet about it...my gps/nurse always ask me about my activity levels when I go in for my injection!

The link between increased bone density and weight bearing exercise is quite well established now so it makes sense to recommend it to active people. Weight bearing exercise also includes walking of course.

There's a bit of hoo haw in the US about depo at the moment because apparently a lot of women over there werent told about the risks - it was on CNN the other day!

I'm trying to think back to the initial appointment now! Its possible that we talked about activity levels but not the specific reason why they were important. I run, do yoga, swim etc so hopefully I'll be ok!

I will do a bit of googling though, thanks.

What's the difference between a conventional coil and the Mirena?

I've had the normal one in, had it in for over 6 years and never any problems. Although they could never find the strings on the annual check-up so i had to have ultrasound! It was completely painless to have put in, and my first period was really really heavy, but it was my first period after having my son so not sure if it was that.

I had it removed last Feb, and because the strings weren't long enough the GP referred me to the gynae who just used some better tweezers to grab it :rotfl:
My baby is 3 weeks old now so no waiting around to conceive (only took a few weeks!)

I've just had a baby and although i'm not in a relationship i'll be getting the coil again i think. I have looked at the other options, but like another poster said i'm not keen on the idea of hormonal contraception, but i know you can be taken in the moment and it's easy to get carried away without condoms. (Even though i'd always use these in a new relationship anyway!!)

I have been through most types of different contraception and at the end of it (and 2 breast reductions) we deduced I am senstive to hormones. Each type has made my boobs massive.

I started on Logynon (?sp) but it made me very moody, then Microgynon 30 and was on that for about 5 years until I went to the GP re big boobs. Got switched to Cerazette but my boobs just kept on growing. Then had the depo injection which seemed OK and I didn't have a period at all. After my first op, my GP suggested the implant so tried that - didn't hurt to have in but 5 months later my boob had ballooned again so had it removed.

Other than the ever growing boobs I had no other side effects with any of them.

Am now just using condoms but may look into the copper coil as this doesn't use any hormones.

Where does the time go?

BeenieCat - Mirena is a coil that also releases hormones. The hormones make it more effective than the (already pretty effective) regular coil.

I hope this is the right place to put this!

Anyway, I'm currently nearing the 2 year mark on my current Pill, which is Dianette (am I allowed to post the name?)? I started taking it to clear some ance, and it has the added benefit of being a contraceptive! According to my doctor, it becomes less effective after 2 years, and as I'm not very good at taking it at the same time everyday, I was looking at other types of contraception. Also, I've been looking online at netdoctor and a few other sites, and they've been saying it shouldn't be taken solely as a contraceptive... http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/100000754.html

I've been thinking about the jab, but I've heard some horror stories about women having three month periods on it. Does anyone have any experience of it? Both positive and negative would be great.

The other option I've been considering is the bar, though the idea of something going under my skin (while I'm still awake! I've never had any form of anestetic, but I'm assuming there's a local?). But the fact that it lasts for a few years is tempting me. I'll obviously have a chat with my doctor about it (have to book my first smear, but thats another matter), but I was hoping to hear some personal experiences that might calm my nerves (or otherwise!).

I'm 20 and in a 18 month relationship btw, if it has an relevance. I'm not looking for any medical advice, just experiences that people have had.

    Thanks!

i was on the depo jab for years, first time 3 years and then took a break to have a family then back on it for 9 years,

i would never remeber to take the pill and the depo really suited me, i had no problems apart from putting on weight, the Doctor insisted that the first time you get it that you are actually having your period to ensure your not pregnant and then you go back every 12 / 13 weeks, i would highly recommend it, i didnt have a period the whole time i was on it, it was great, not having to worry about your period coming on holidays etc, etc,

im off it near 3 years now (hubby got snip) and it does take 6 / 12 months for your period to return, but now that they have they are much lighter and 2 days shorter than they were before i took it,

like everything else theres pro's and con's, but speaking from experince, i would def. recommend it, but it might not work for everyone,

    good luck, wotever you decide,

I had the Depo Jab for around 2 years. First 18 months were absolutely fine and then a constant period for 6 months!!!
Next had Implanon (Implant), had that in and again after about 18 months I started getting constant periods. I was given the pill to regulate it but as soon as I stopped taking it the periods came back.

Im now on the pill, I found the others to be far too much hassle in the long run & I don't think my body really agrees with them.

Another vote for the implanon implant!

On my 3rd one (i think! It may be 4th?) no side effects, have one period roughtly every 18 months. Easy to put in/take out. Putting in was painless, local anthestetic and then they put a thin tube near your arm (looks like a pen) twist the end and voila! Implant in!

Taking out: local anthestetic, small insicion, pull with tweezers. Done and dusted, put new one in! Smal scars barely visable on inside of arm. Can't feel it under my skin either (unless i push the end of it and you can see it.)

Although i would recommeded it to anyone some people don't get on with it but my experience of the implant has been fab!

(PS sorry about the spelling, my spell checker isn't working!)
