What kind of contraception?

I hope this is the right place to put this!

Anyway, I'm currently nearing the 2 year mark on my current Pill, which is Dianette (am I allowed to post the name?)? I started taking it to clear some ance, and it has the added benefit of being a contraceptive! According to my doctor, it becomes less effective after 2 years, and as I'm not very good at taking it at the same time everyday, I was looking at other types of contraception. Also, I've been looking online at netdoctor and a few other sites, and they've been saying it shouldn't be taken solely as a contraceptive... http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/100000754.html

I've been thinking about the jab, but I've heard some horror stories about women having three month periods on it. Does anyone have any experience of it? Both positive and negative would be great.

The other option I've been considering is the bar, though the idea of something going under my skin (while I'm still awake! I've never had any form of anestetic, but I'm assuming there's a local?). But the fact that it lasts for a few years is tempting me. I'll obviously have a chat with my doctor about it (have to book my first smear, but thats another matter), but I was hoping to hear some personal experiences that might calm my nerves (or otherwise!).

I'm 20 and in a 18 month relationship btw, if it has an relevance. I'm not looking for any medical advice, just experiences that people have had.

Thanks!

  • I have the contraceptive implant and I've got on really well with it, I had it put in October 2007, had a 'normal' period the following month and I haven't had a period since then. When it was put in I had a local anesthetic and I chose not to look while it was put in as I'm a bit squeamish . When it's going in it just feels like something pressing fairly hard against your arm - but not painful. They put a tight bandage round it as apparently it's meant to reduce bruising, however I ended up with quite a large bruise on my arm. As the local anesthetic wore off my arm began to ache, but this only lasted one evening. Now I barely notice it although a lot of my friends are a bit freaked out by it

The injection made me fat, moody and I think it did make my periods lighter, however, I would never take it again.

It has also made my friend gain quite alot of weight also.

    I wouldn't recommend it.

I wont use the pill, or have anything with any hormones so my options right now I think are just the old copper coil. Which I am not looking forward to having done!

I have 3 kids and really don't want another!

I'm on Mycrogynon 30. Well I was before I planned to get pregnant. It was a very good pill and I didn't have any problems with it. What's nice about it is you take it for 21days then stop for 7. Also you have a 12 hour period in which to take it which has been a godsend at sometimes when I've forgotten.

I would not recommend depo or the implant

I have the implant currently, I have lost 2st from "morning sickness", sore boobs, constant cramps- sex isnt on the cards anymore!!

depo, one shot took me 12 months to recover from, awful migraines

If you find a pill that your happy with, stick to it. I was fabulous on the minipill, no periods, no migraines...if it aint broke dont fix it!!

I used to use Boots Persona. You wee on a stick like a pregnancy test and it tells you if it safe to have sex without contraception or not. Husband has a vasectomy now so thats sorted that!

I don't understand the appeal of putting unnecessary hormones into your body personally.

I was on Cerazette (mini pop) after my first daughter and I ended up with depression which went after I came off it. I ended up having the Mirena coil which is fantastic. No periods for a couple of years, no weight gain, minor cramps after it was put in.
I decided to try for another baby, had it taken out and fell a week later :D

I've had another Mirena put in and don't notice it there.

I too loved Microgynon but I had to be taken off it as it raised my blood pressure :(

I went onto Cerazette I think, which is a mini pill, I had no bother with it, but I was crap at remembering to take it lol which is weird, cos I always remembered the Microgynon but with the mini pill you have to take it every day and for some reason I kept forgetting

But then we decided to start a family and came off the pill and just used condoms will we were ready to try (and were successful 3 weeks later yay lol)

I'm also on this pill and it works well for me. I remember, when I was around the same age as the OP, I went through a stage of trying different pills to find the one that suited me best. Some weren't effective enough (spotting almost every day), others were too strong and made my boobs feel like punching bags.

You have to find what works for you. Have you discussed your options with your GP? There may well be things in your medical history that would prevent you from using certain types of contraception, so I would discuss it with your doctor first.

Personally, I have never really considered the injection or implant as it feels like quite a drastic step to me. Stopping periods for long periods of time doesn't 'feel' right to me and the risk of side effects was higher than I was willing to risk.

Is there a Family Planning Clinic (FPC) near you? It might also be good to see them and discuss all options at length there.

Unfortunately, our experiences are just that: OUR experiences. Whilst one person may react badly to the pill or injection, someone else may be completely fine.

  • Hi.
I had the jab for a number of years without any problems, then moved on to the implant (It will have been in 3yrs this April) I never had periods with the jab or the implant, although for the last 3mths I have had a very light period for 3/4 days a month, but no other side effects
As Pinkpanther says the implant is put in using a local anesthetic..and just has a sort of 'tugging' sensation while it's being put in. The bruise was more unsightly than painful, and all in all I've found it to be great - that doesn't mean to say it suits everyone!
I will be going back for my second implant in April.
