I had the implant following a termination and it was horrible. I had permanent PMT (you know that feeling where you just want to punch everyone) and i put on some serious weight that I've really struggled trying to lose.

My mum had the injections once nd she ballooned too :(
Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession :o:o
  • I used to be on Dianette for PCOS and that along with Microgynon were the best for me.
I got taken off Dianette after 2 years though and begged not to as it helped with my symptoms but my doctor said it was because of the risk of DVT and a few girls had died from it:eek:
    But i vote Microgynon.

I've had the implant for 4 yrs (so on my 2nd one now) and I like it :) No periods and no other side effects, I don't think! The only way to know whether or not you get on with it is to get it lol

  • I too have the implants and am on my fourth ones, i think they are fab and would highly recommend trying them.
I had a 5 year one when they first came out and then had a baby after they were taken out. I then went onto the 3 year ones after birth and am on my 3rd lot of them. All of them have stopped my periods, get about one a year. I have had no other side affects.
As a previous poster says, it is just a bit uncomfortable when they put it in, but is nothing when you think you could have no periods for the 3 years! - a small price to pay me thinks - lol!

I'm on depo and its been fab so far (4th injection looming) - no periods, no weight gain, no massive moods

However, you are really only recommended it if you do lots of weight bearing exercise due to the osteoporsis (sp?) risk and possible weight gain...

I have found that my bp has increased so I am going to make an appointment and have a chat about going back on the pill I think - sadly I cant have dianette anymore as I took it for 5 years and its not been proven for long term use!

Definitely have a long chat to your doctor about possible replacements - there is another pill that works similar to dianette but its exepensive so not all pcts will provide it!

I've had both the injection and am now on the implant. Before having kids I was on the pill (marvelon).

The injection worked well for me, and after the second jab I stopped getting periods. I was on it for a couple of years with no noticeable problems. I did get depressed, but I think that was just my personal circumstances at the time, and not because of the injection.

In June last year I got the implant, and I've started getting periods again, and although it's early to tell, they may be regular. Last month I had my first full 'heavy' period in years, lasting nearly a full week, which was perplexing. Apart from this I haven't noticed any bad effects.

I did consider the mirena coil, but don't like the idea that you can feel the strings. The idea of something that tangible to be in me for so long just personally doesn't sit well with me and I find it a turn-off.

I think it's going to be really hard for you to choose no matter what, because what works for one will cause havoc in another. Before I had either the jab or implant, I read all sorts of horror stories on the net about people 'ballooning', or constant periods, acne etc etc and it really made me worry. I really wanted worry-free sex though so took a chance both times, and it has been good for me.

I've been on Dianette for years and years and my doctor has no qualms in continuing to prescribe it. If it aint broke why fix it?

I went on it because of taking Roaccutane at 16 (baaaad acne) and had to ensure that I was not going to get pregnant on or around taking it.

Not quite sure how they thought I would pull anyone looking the way I did let alone have nookie but there you go ...:rotfl:

I'm on the depo injection and was never told this. The doctor who prescribed it for me was a women's and sexual health specialist so I'm sure she would have known!

I went on the cerazette mini pill for three months first because the hormones are pretty much the same just to see if it suited me. I've had no periods, no weight gain (well, a bit over christmas but that's my own fault!) and no other symptoms at all, its been great!

I get terrible migraines related to oestrogen (one a month during a natural cycles, a few a week when I was on the combined pill) and I haven't had any on the injection.

The thing is, everybody reacts differently to conrtaceptives and you'll hear horror stories for all of them. The only thing you can really do is talk to your doctor and try out what you think will work for you.

I was on Logynon between the age of 17 and 24, and I got on fine with it - periods as regular as clockwork although they did las a full week with days 2-4 being particularly heavy. After the birth of my son I had an implanon implant - with this I had no periods for a year and then a year of really heavy fortnightly periods. It then settled down again for a bit, before I had it removed to get pregnant with my daughter.

Since she was born I've been on Cerazette. Periods are light but irregular, which is a bit of a pain. I'm wondering now if I should switch back to Logynon or maybe try Implanon again, or the Mirina coil...

Thats what they told me when I first asked about depo becuase my sister has osteoporsis midly - its bone density loss thats the problem with depo. They had a whole leaflet about it...my gps/nurse always ask me about my activity levels when I go in for my injection!

The link between increased bone density and weight bearing exercise is quite well established now so it makes sense to recommend it to active people. Weight bearing exercise also includes walking of course.

There's a bit of hoo haw in the US about depo at the moment because apparently a lot of women over there werent told about the risks - it was on CNN the other day!
