  • Hi all.
I have only used mine to do beef stew and to slow cook lamb chops but have always had to drain the liquid. I have always believed that whatever is in the sc must be completely covered by fluid, usually water:embarasse. After reading some of your posts I feel that is not the case.
There are so many lovely sounding meals but very few have recipes and instructions, is there somewhere I can find some?

Got a sweet potato curry in there ready to come out just as soon as I cook some rice to go with it :)
  • A few basic slow cooker questions:

    - Is it really necessary to brown meat before you place in the slow cooker?

    - Is it possible to use jars of sauces? If you can, do you need to add water?

I am going to buy a slow cooker this week :j been looking at cooks work 3.5lt.

It wasn't really a recipe as such, it was more like what have I got in the cupboards that could be a curry! From what I remember:

    1 onion
    Two biggish cloves of garlic
Two red chillies (not particularly hot ones so I left the seeds in)
Three or four sweet potatoes, peeled and diced
Tin of low fat coconut milk
    Tsp of turmeric
    Tsp of cumin
    Tsp of garam masala
    Tsp of ground coriander
    Good glug of lemon juice
    Good glug of soy sauce

I'm sure there was something else but I can't remember. I sweat the onion and garlic off first before adding it to the slow cooker with everything else. I cooked it on low for about 8 hours and served it with some braised rice.

Using my slow cooker for the first time today. Making a beef stew type thing, have some pots, a carrot , an onion a swede, stewing steak and beef stock, bay leaf, garlic, soy sauce, peppercorns and mixed herbs. It's on low and OH will change it to warm when he gets in so will cook for abt 9 hours, hopefully not too long! Hope it's nice as would like to use slow cooker more!

It isn't really necessary to brown meat, but it helps to make it look more appetising if you do brown it first.

I dont usually bother browning meat, just chuck it all in. And yes jars of sauce work very well if you are short of time on a morning. You shouldnt need to add extra water. Those sachet mixes are good too as someone else has said.

We are having stew and dumplings, mash and veg.

I've just had cream of onion soup from my new slow cooker (broke the pot in my old one). Made with home grown onions and served up with home made bread. Absolutely scrummy and with leftovers for tomorrow. Yum yum yum
