  • i cooked pork with pears today, it was lovely,
just a pork shoulder resting on 2 sliced pears,3 chopped carrots, 1 red onion, half a sweet heart cabbage and about 1/4 bottle of magners pear cider.

i left it cooking for 8 hours and it was gorgeous, i took the pork and carrots out and whizzed the rest into a pear sauce, we had it with mash

going to try brisket tomorrow with chillis

    That sausage casserole sounds delicious!
I stuck in some rump steak off cuts ( I buy whole rumps for my steaks and thats the offcuts - which then pays for my steak deal night) some real ale (we have to pour off 2 pints each morning so that the beer is fresh not sitting in lines) some onions, mushrooms, salt, pepper, beef stock, worcester sauce and voila! Fyne pye! (with pre bought pastry lids) The fyne comes from fyne ales - the beer i used, and it goes down a storm on the specials board, and covers my costs for the steak deal - OS Love!

Cleaned the fridge out tonight - thats a euphemism for making soup in our house!!!!
Chicken carcass for stock then all the leftover bits and pieces chucked in with a hope and a prayer - smells okay!!
    One life.

I have lurked on this thread for a while, but finally managed to find my slow cooker and get some ingredients :) v proud of myself!
Have onions, swede, carrots, braising steak, red wine, tomatoes and some stock. Will be making dumplings later (OH is v excited!) so should make a fab stew plus am hoping there will be enough to freeze!

Can anyone tell me, should 9 hrs be enough for the stew? Have it on Med at the moment, probably going to add dumplings about an hour before the end...

having an alternative sunday roast which involves slow cooked topside joint. blackened in the oven peppers onions toms and garlic, put together with mushrooms, tom puree, and a carton of chopped toms for a sauce. i have also made homemade potato croquettes, with the last of a hm bread loaf as breadcrumbs coating some left over mash. AND (haha!) i will still do hm yorky puds, not quite alternative but i think it may work! :rotfl:
