I have gammon in mine today which will be sliced and used cold for packups. It smells lovely. I'd like to make the stock into pea and ham soup but I've never done it before. I've got some dried peas soaking, i'll add them when I take the gammon out along with a couple of onions. WIll that make a decent soup? ANy tips woulod be appreciated!!

OH makes a lovely soup from the stock - sautee carrots, onion and celery, add the stock along with cooked butter beans, then shredded gammon and lots and lots of parsley.

We've found that the stock from slow cooker gammon seems to be so much clearer than boiled gammon, not sure why!
  • Today I've got turkey leg korma with lentils, another recipe found on here courtesy of Weezl's 50p a day challenge. First time cooking with lots of lentils so I'm hoping it won't dry out or the opposite - end up with lentils swimming in lots of water!

I bought a recipe book yesterday for my slow cooker. I have had it for years but never used it. Anyway, i knocked up the following:

1.3kg Brisket (i used Braising Steak)
    Salt/Pepper
    2 Medium Onions diced
    6 Carrots sliced
1 small swede (i used turnip) cubed
    3 medium potatoes cubed
    1litre beef stock
    2tbsp chives

    1. Preheat slow cooker on High
    2. Brown the beef in frying pan.
    3. Put all veg & Beef in slow cooker and season.
    4. Pour in stock.
    5. Put on lid and cook for 8 - 10 hrs (i cooked mine for 9hrs)
    6. If the stick is too thin when cooked, poor into a pan and boil until reduced to favoured consistency.

I have to say, i make casseroles/stews regularly in winter and this one was beautiful, however if i make it again id probably reduce the stock by about a third and replace with red wine, i would also put a clove of garlic in, a little thyme and a bay leaf. I would also leave out the onions and replace them with a few shallots or baby onions, and replace the sliced carrot with baby whole chantenay ones.
But for my first meal i have to say i was very impressed.
