Sorry can't help you Wayne! I chuck everything in and hope for the best. I started out with a book called 'The principals of Slow cooking' and just use my judgement now.
I've got a slightly too big turkey drumstick (Asda £1.47) in there now so I covered the top with foil to create a seal and keep the steam in before putting the lid on. Because its solid meat and bone I put the veg in raw and will leave it about 5 hours on medium before peeking. Its trial and error really!!
If I was doing a stew and sealing the meat first I saute the veg as well to start the cooking process.
Good luck and don't give up!!
    One life.

I have gammon in mine today which will be sliced and used cold for packups. It smells lovely. I'd like to make the stock into pea and ham soup but I've never done it before. I've got some dried peas soaking, i'll add them when I take the gammon out along with a couple of onions. WIll that make a decent soup? ANy tips woulod be appreciated!!

been reading this thread with interest.i have a slow cooker that we use at the mo just to do a gammon joint in but would love to use it for more.i have tried stew and etc in it but veg always feels uncooked even after beaing on for about nine hours.can you knowledable people lease explain where i,m going wrong.:D

I';m fairly new with my slow cooker so the only advice i can give is to layer your ingredients carefully. Hard veg on the bottom, progressing up to the meat, liquid going in last. has worked for me so far :o

Chicken with an onion inside for me. Be interesting to see how it tastes. Did one with lemon on the outside and thought the taste was a little strong..

Wayne try frying the veg for ten minutes or so until going soft before putting in the slow cooker. Oh abd dont chop it too thick.

I sometimes soften the veg first using the microwave - easily done while prepping the meat.
