OH has gone away on a stag weekend, I am planning on getting up early to make a beef, ale & mushroom stew in the slow cooker. It should be ready for when he gets in. Will serve it in a giant yorkshire pudding. Will serve the leftovers on Monday in a baked potato.
ooo have you a recipe for this?0 -
Hi,
It's adapted from the recipe for the Hairy Bikers steak & ale pie, which is also lovely.
Ingredients
500g diced stewing steak
1 onion diced
crushed clove of garlic
Button Mushrooms (the whole packet as it comes in supermarket)
2 carrots chopped
2 sprigs of fresh thyme or tsp dried
200ml Ale (e.g Manns Bitter,99p for bottle from Aldi/Home Bargains)
300ml beef stock
1 tbsp Oil
1 tbsp plain flour
Salt & Pepper
Method
Coat the steak in the flour with the salt & pepper, and brown the meat in batches. Leave to one side and meanwhile fry the onions for a few mins, add the garlic for the last minute, add the carrots, mushrooms and thyme and stir for a minute or so, add the ale and slowly add the stock. Bring to the boil.
There are different ways to cook this, you can either leave on the hob on low for 2 hours with lid on, place in the slow cooker all day or put in the oven for around 2 hours on 150c/160c.
**If placing in the slow cooker, you'll need to reduce the amount of liquid used, possibly 100ml of ale to 150-200ml of stock**
**If you use the slow cooker or hob and find there's too much liquid, add a couple of teaspoons of gravy granuals to thicken**
**To turn into a pie, I follow the above, and then place in a pie dish, with a sheet of puffy pastry and brush a beaten egg on top to glaze and bake in the oven for approx 30mins at 200c.
I am being lazy, and using ready made frozen giant yorkies today.

Used my new baby one tonight, braised meatballs in spicy tomato sauce.
With my larger 3.5L oval slow cookers the meatballs didn't get covered in the sauce, they do in the baby one which was one of the reasons I justified it to myself!
Also poached two chicken breasts in it last week, as got the meat out for tea, then got invited out (and paid for) and were due to go out the night after too.
Had my two 3.5L's out at the weekend, one with HM Leek & Potato soup in and one with HM Butternut Squash & Chilli soup my OH made. The big 6L had chilli in, and MIL's 3.5L had fresh cooked rice in for an hour on high with lots of extra water to stop it sticking.
I've had my moneys worth this week0 -

Not got anything in slow cooker tonight but was just browsing on line for a new larger one and looked on MrTs and found one I liked and then discovered I had unused vouchers so I pick up my new one on Friday from local store for the grand sum of £1.50. Will be christening it at weekend so now I'm browsing on here for inspriration:T0

I have just put an Asian style beef casserole in mine. A large joint of beef, 3 different coloured peppers, spring and white onions and broccoli, garlic and ginger. Then I added 200ml of beef stock with a good dash dash of soy sauce and a pinch of chilli flakes.
I am hoping to use the left over beef in wraps tomorrow night following a recipe on the grocery challenge thread:)£36/£240

Porridge in the morning in the little one. A 12 Portion Bolognese sauce for a couple of weeks.
I could make it better myself at home. All I need is a small aubergine...
I moved to Liverpool for a better life.
And goodness, it's turned out to be better and busier!0 -
It's never really occurred to me to use it for stuff that doesn't take that long to cook normally - like bolognese sauce or veg soup. Are there any advantages to using slow cooker rather than half hour on the hob in a saucepan?
At the moment mine is only getting used every couple of weeks to make chicken carcass stock as a base for soups. But casserole season is on it's way. I really fancy a nice beef stew now :-)[STRIKE][/STRIKE]I am a long term poster using an alter ego for debts and anything where I might mention relationship problems or ex. four chopped bramleys which I was gifted from my BiL's PiL's (there's a tenuous connection lol).
Put a drop of water, peeled and roughly chopped the apples, half a tsp of mixed spice and a tsp of sweetner. Left them in the baby slowie for a couple of hours.
They're now in pie dishes cooling down until they're cool enough to freeze0
