I have a whole chicken in mine, so its rubber chicken for the next few days! Roast tonight, probably a curry tomorrow.......

How does the chicken end up? Does it all collapse and fall apart from the bones or does it come out whole and you crisp it In the oven- i want to do this but worried about ending up with a collapsed soggy chicken!

Being a bit of a wimp so the first thing I am trying is a pot roast. It says it serves 6 so reckone we could get at least that with the 2 of us but DH suggested we invite some friends over so it may all go tonight! At least I don't have to rush out and get any more shopping. Going to try it through the week too as I am away soon and that way I can freeze loads of stuff up for DH.

What meals are goood for throwing in like the pot roast and not having to brown etc first? I have limited time in the mornings when I am working so could do with quick things.

  • I'm so excited today!!

I got a slow cooker for christmas, as I have been wanting one for a few years, and today is the first time I am using it!!! (judging by the number of posts on this thread, it seems to be a normal thing for lots of people, but for me its very exciting!)

So, I am doing BBQ ribs today, using Hugh FW's BBQ sauce recipe. I've done slow cooked BBQ ribs before, but in the oven for 4/5 hours, never in a slow cooker. I'm not entirely sure how to do it, so I have put everything in together and put it on low. Is this right? Or should it be in high? Help please!

Had keema mince in mine last night, i couldn`t find the original recipe that i made last time although i`m sure that it was on here somewhere lol

Found a different recipe on the GC thread, i used cubed swede instead of potatoes and added a few extra ingredients that i found lurking and its all portioned up in the fridge.

Tink_04 i've never done jackets in the sc before but i always find that potatoes and root veg seem to take longer in my sc than in other peeps.

Planning on starting the GC again soon :p

Yellow sticker stewing steak, carrots and onion. I did my first joint of brisket last night hope it tastes as good as it smells for sarnies later today. I'm new to SC too had one in the larder for over a year and only used it now 4 times
Why pay full price when you may get it YS ;)
  • Beef casserole :)

Another question about the chicken :) I'm doing roast chicken tomorrow and hoping to try making my own chicken stock with the carcass  I'm sure I've read about people putting the carcass in the slow cooker with veggies to make the stock but I'm not sure how long to leave it and I'm assuming it would be best on low?

I reckon low if it normally takes that long anyway, enjoy your ribs :)

On low definately, the longer the better, - sometimes I've even left it on all day to extract the flavour. I drain off the stock and let it go cold so that I can take the fat off the top before freezing it. Any decent bits of chicken I put to one side and freeze (soup, mix with ham in puff pastry, curry, loads of uses) the skin and other little bits go down the dogs - they love it. Only the picked cleaned bones go in the bin.

In my SC today - rice pudding. My OH likes jam on the top when it's cooked so todays flavour is 'Crab Apple & clove jelly'

Me too! I got one for Christmas and started using it a few days ago, you sound as excited as I was then.

Please let me know if you find anything nice to make, my first two goes have been distastes really, they've come out looking like the pictures but tasting really bad. Going to try some meaty stuff in it next, if that turns out badly I fear it will end up going in the cupboard though.

Hope you have better luck :)

    Hope sharing saves some pain.
  • We had a beef stew I prepared on Thursday night and popped on Friday morning. It was lovely to come home from a day at work and have dinner ready, like living with my lovely Mum again :) Anyhoo, my hubby made some suet dumplings and popped them on top Friday afternoon, but they were very doughy, any advice? Can dumplings be done in the slow cooker?
    Thanks
