  • Hi all, I have a quick question..
I made dinner in the SC today, it was a packet of diced turkey thigh, a jar of chilli sauce, a can of chopped tomatoes, and some water. It turned out fine, but there is a lot of liquid left. I was wondering if I strain the liquid and freeze it would it make a good spicy tomato base for soup, etc?

  • I would take it out and reduce it on the cooker or microwave then reheat the lot all together and eat! Bon Appetit!

  • Can anyone tell me if you can cook pulses in the slow cooker - I have chicken breasts cooking in it now and would love to add them, but never tried. I tend to put slow cooker on in late evenings as mornings not good for me so wouldn't get food in it cooked for that nights meal. So just wondering if I put them in now - just gone midnight and will not be eating till around 5pm if they would be cooked. Thanks

  • To cook pulses. Right proportions, No salt or salty stock, add lots of flavour ie carrot, onion, bay and cook for a good lot of time. Some pulses need 10 mins hard boiling to get rid of some toxin that requires it. Add salt when cooked.
When I make curries, I always pre cook the pulses and then add them to the spiced tomato or whatever vegetable mixture as the Indians do.

  • Schools vary as to whether to add bicarb or not, experiment with what you think is right. Personally I won't use it but have never tried it.

  • Thanks, I found some posts from 2005 where pulses were discussed, and most agreed lentils, barley, soup mixes - like one i have lentils/barley/yellow split peas can be washed and put in, so all are in and been cooking for 9 hrs now. I have chicken soup cooking in one slow cooker and chicken stew in another. Soup will do us next 2 - 3 days and chicken stew will be enough for tonight then I will freeze the second portion ( or I might freeze both portions and make some bread and we will just have the soup with bread tonight, would just need to add some more vegetables to it to ensure its filling enough, just got to add the potatoes to it in a few hours as I find if cook them to long they go mushy even in Slow Cooker. As I am up and not so bad this morning I might see if things are cooked and if so take them out of slow cooker to reheat later and put some other meals on used up all my meals I had frozen and need more ready for days when I am bad and hubby has to feed himself.

  • Today I have a beef stew. I'm cheating with a packet sauce though.

I haven't used my sc in absolutely ages - I'm really looking forward to it.
  • lamb stew in mine - last night before going to bed i put in the slowe cooker a piece of rolled lamb breast (3 for £2.50 from local butcher), 2 diced carrots, a diced potato, some shredded savoy cabbage, some red lentils, barley, soaked chick peas and soaked split yellow peas, two chicken stock cubes, a tablespoon of chopped chilli, half a jar of t^sc) value tomato pasta sauce and swilled the jar out with water. it went on low overnight and smells and looks delicious. it's on cooling now to reheat later tonight.... am slavvering at the prospect already!
