Help with finding my father

Hi guys,
Im needing a little help and advice about the best ways to try to track my dad down. Last time i saw him was when i was probably about 3 or 4 years old. I am now 27.

For years i have tried to find him using the electoral role online etc but because of his name it has been really difficult. It it probably the most popular name in the UK and i get loads of results back.

When me and my brother were younger he used tophone and my brother would speak to him. Back then he was living in Halifax but who knows if he is still living in that area.

Im not sure whether to use a detective agency as i really dont have the money to spend on that service and.......well it is all about money saving on here lol.

Any ideas, advice etc anyone could give me would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

My dad uses genesreunited. By doing this, my mum's dad was tracked down. if the name is common, you may need to check upon a few things first.

The Salvation Army are very good at this.

  • thank you. ive already tried them but they can only help if my mum and dad were married.

my brother told me my mum said they were married, she tells me they werent.......get the impression shes hiding something.

  • online search agenecies can be quite good - they are not detective agencies so won't cost that much. i think they search all kinds of other registers eg credit checks, electoral roll, births deaths & marriages etc etc
  • Hi, Have you spoken to other relatives who may have more information regarding your dads whereabouts......there is a website called 192.com that might be useful in finding someones address.
You could place an advert in the personal column of a local newspaper in the area where you knew he last lived.
terryw is right the Salvation army may be helpful so give them ago.
    good luck.
  • lol i think i have probably tried everything i can try except detective agency as i have just been on the 192 site and still got lots of results as our surnames are smith.

Thing is though, i live in Scotland and his last known address was in Halifax. I tried writing but he no longer lived there.

He has a middle name which i thought would make it a bit easier but its just as hard.

All his family live down in England so i dont even know anyone from that side of the family. I have asked my gran but she cant remember much.

They only deal with people who are married at the birth of a child

Obvious other ideas. Check with any other family members for location in Halifax and a bit of door-knocking or visits to local pubs/places that he might have attended. Check out last known employers. A few cards in newsagent's windows perhaps? Friends Reunited for his year group - many people keep in touch with old school chums. I believe ( but I am not certain) that the NI number dept of DWP will forward mail to the last known address but obviously will not give out this information.

Best of luck. I really hope you regain contact.

  • also write letters to the neighbouring houses at his last known address and enclose a reply paid envelope - my father was contacted that way

also the agencies i mentioned where you pay but not detective rates, they also traced him and supplied an address
