I was told today we (me and the missus), in a small 3 bed terraced house use twice as much as the average person for lecky... We are at work all day too...

Weve used 6200 kw from Nov 08 - Nov 09, was told average per year is just over 3000...???? We dont use lecky heaters, or anything big.. have low enery light bulbs everywhere..

Our annual lecky bill was £680, and gas was £380 (6890kw), for thw ame period...

Don't worry too much about averages - the average gas consumption is about 3 x yours!

You're paying way too much for your gas, btw ;)
Expect to knock at least £100 off that annual bill - use the comparison sites in the resource bar above to get yourself a better deal.

  • Looking at the standard tarrif prices and some head banging maths i guess it is about right for our electricity use,

Just need to cut that down by £3.00 a day now, Hmm

I have tried to get scottish power to set up a direct debit but due to the arrears they cant do that and they cannot fit a prepayment meter they say, Not that we could afford to put £40-50 per week into one,

In this recent cold snap, our usage has crept up a bit due to extra heating.

During this last week, we've averaged about 8.5kwh per day (76p) in electricity and about 40kwh per day (£1.35) in gas. This is for a one-bedroom apartment in a Victorian conversion, no insulation at all and high ceilings/sash windows/wooden floors which don't exactly help to preserve heat.

However, when calculating our annual usage I've taken into account periods of very cold temperatures below that of normal winter temperatures and have set our direct debit accordingly. We're using well below our target and what we're paying for :D

Can anyone advise me how much i should set a direct debit for dual fuel with southern electric for a young professional couple living in a 3 bed mid terrace with gas heating and hob and all other appliances electric. i do not heat the largest bedroom as it is an attic room that does not get used. the heating is set to be on from 630 til 9am then from 530 til 1030pm.

    thanks!!

It depends on a huge number of variables regarding both your usage and your house, but I would think that about £35 a month gas, and £20 a month electric should cover it enough. Obviously you'd need to check this as you don't wan't to end up too much in debt (or credit) to them.

144 units a day yesi did say 144.

We have electric heaters not storage heaters either - its a nightmare.

Blimey, 144 units (presuming the usual 1 unit = 1kwh) would be the enough to have 3 x 2kw heaters on 24/7 !!

We live in a property with no insulation, tall ceilings, sash windows and wooden floors but a single 2kw heater will bring the room from 10 degrees to 20 degrees in about an hour give or take.

What kind of heaters do you have? That is an insane amount of usage, especially if your room temperatures are barely above freezing!

we have convector heaters Basically the same as halogen heaters. The house is freezing. I have started another thread about how to get rid of my meter and get it cheaper but im having a nightmare.

Worst decison i ever made moving in here regardless of how perfect the house is 4 us.

Yes we have 5 x 3kw heater & 2 x 1.2kw heaters bought these myself as a top up. Even having them all on full whack doesnt heat our house up. We still all walk around with jumpers and dressing gowns on, and being cold all the time is wearing us down so we dont have the motivation to do anything.

The hearters are placed in completely the worng places, we have loads of problems with mould, and condensation, all our heat goes straight out the windows due to where the heaters are placed.

I have just worked ours out for the past twelve months going onto Feb this years bill and remember we have had a very cold winter and we suffer from severe condensation problems too.

Our total cost for both the gas and electric is £1275 for the last 12 months. 3 bedroomed bungalow and 4 people living in it. Is it good or bad???

    .

    How big is your property?
Can you move any of the radiators, or add thick thermal lined curtains?
Are you renting privately or via a lettings agent?
What is the temperature of your property on average with all of the heating running full whack?

  • Ours was about 1500, but we've only just started paying attention.

For instance, I hadn't realised that our tv and computers (2) on standby use 40% of the energy they use when fully on - they used to be on or on standby constantly. Also I have 2 big freezers that are 2 units each per day, so one of them will be going - it will mean I shop more wisely also.

My hours at work have been cut so we're having to look carefully at everything.

The cold mornings remind me of when I was a child - being slow to get out of a lovely warm bed and then getting dressed very quickly!

We suffered from condensation problems too, but invested in a dehumidifier which has proved to be excellent. Less than 2p per hour to run.
