A friend of mine (who knows that I collect Clubcard points) was telling me a third hand story about someone in the East Yorkshire area who was "wombling" and taking in about 20 receipts a day.

He was eventually stopped and the police are investigating.

  • Hi

Don't see a problem with picking up disregarded receipts as long as people are sensible about it. I believe you are allowed to redeem three receipts a day through customer services, although this amount of activity would surely arouse tesco's suspicions especiallly if you are using your own clubcard to make purchases on the same date you redeem receipts. (if the date on the receipts you are redeeming are past dates then I don't see a problem).

I found a receipt for 105 points the other day and did not think twice about picking it up and taking it to customer services. It's worth £4.20 to me in clubcard deals and to put it into perspective there is no way in the world I would walk past a £5 note with out picking it up so I don't see why this should be any different in fact I would probably feel a bit guilty about picking up the £5 as I would know somebody had genuinely lost it (although I am
sure I would overcome this) the difference with tesco receipts is somebosy chose to disgard them, so I cannot see anything dishonest in this.

As for how I feel about cheating tesco's I personally do not see as cheating tesco's as they have the loyalty points built in to their accounting practices. If people choose not to particpate in the loyalty scheme then thats up to them. But If they don't and there is a possibility of me using their disregarded receipt then so be it.

  • lol - Forgive me for laughing, but that is a classic 'mythical story'. I heard that too at my local!
  • The guy who told me the story did not even know the term wombling when he told me and I know who the man is (indirectly) who was arrested.

He is not the only person to be facing prosecution either.

My brother and wife shop at Tescos every week. They spend over £100 per week and give me all the receipts. I do not think it is wrong that I should put these on my card. My bro knows the benefits - he has seen my MFI purchases. I tell CS they are my brother's receipts. How is this any different to using someone's discarded receipts that I don't know??
  • dunno if i's been mentioned on this but clubcard don't actually allow you to do this and if you're caught out you can have your clubcard taken off you. Usually it's on the miserable CSD people who report you, but I've been on shift with a couple of girls who've phoned clubcard up and reported the customer for 'wombling'. Don't know what happened to the customer as I've never reported anyone myself, but they can remove ALL the points from your card and cancel your card, so you lose your own points too.
  • oh, and there was a guy on the tills on my store who was doing this, taking receipts that were discarded and getting the points (he wasn't stealing reciepts or running his clubcard through the till, just collecting reciepts) and he was sacked. I doubt a member of staff could use their own clubcard, unless they had another that wasn't their discount card, and they only used it once in a blue moon, as the tills trace what clubcards are being used and it would show up pretty easily and isn't worth the sack. Plus they do staff searches for stuff like money and clubcards.
  • They should have clearly marked bins easily acceptable to collect receipts that people don't want, maybe on every till like you find when you get off a bus for used tickets. It is stupid that people dump them on the floor or leave them in a trolley to blow around a carpark.
People picking them up are doing Tesco a favour in my opinion.

How can CS report you for wombling when they can't prove it???

I can shop in Tesco and pay cash / debit card /credit card. My mum has a key fob for me and she can pay all those ways too and my sister collects for me too, so thats 9 different ways of paying tesco and getting points ... add that to say, going in with a freind and passing her my card at the checkout and thats more ways ... so how on earth can they prove the receipts are not yours???

I have wombled a few points here and there when I am near Tesco and never had a problem yet ...

I'm just looking forward to the nice big fat receipts discarded towards Xmas ... especially Xmas week when us womblers will be quids in.
