I've just watched this online and was surprised to see Sad Cake... the one on the tv tho was more like an Eccles Cake as it contained all the currants inside and extra sugar. The Sad Cake my gran used to make was just leftover plain pastry with the currants mixed in.
More of a Chorley Cake than an Eccles Cake I thought (doesn't an Eccles cake use puff pastry, whereas a Chorley cake is shortcrust?). I've never heard of a sad cake (:rotfl:sorry, the name makes me laugh!), but I think I'll make one next time I have leftover pastry - I hate throwing even a tiny bit away!0 -

If you do Justa, Nanna used to mix them in good rather than in one big clump in the middle. She never shaped it that much so turned out like a pastry wodge...What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0 -

Strange. That Sad Cake is definitely what I know as a Chorley Cake, always made with the left over shortcrust pastry from a pie. (Eccles Cake is made from leftover puff pastry, and sprinkled with sugar, but I prefer the Chorley version
). I've never heard it called Sad Cake before.
So, those who have invested in the book, is it worth buying or not?
I think it's a shame they haven't put everyone's recipes in. A lot of people will buy the book expecting all the recipes featured on the show, not all of them will have access to the internet to find the downloads.Official DFW Nerd No 096 - Proud to have dealt with my debt!0 -
I make what we call Pan Haggelty
PC went bang in the middle of this post, hence its brevity! What I was trying to say was that I make Pan Haggelty - definitely two words, gg's and an l in there for us. While I'm a transplant to Geordie-land, my husband is born and bred Geordie - Spital Tongues for those who know exactly how central that is! His mother called it that, (Pan Haggelty, not Spital Tongues) as did her mother and I'm only doing what I was taught! I used to try and do strange things to it - like add cream, and layers of sweet potato etc. but am not allowed to do this or I get called sarcastic names that include the words "soft" and "southern", unless I give the dish an alternative name!0
