I've run my gas through some of the comparison sites, and they are cheapest. Bizzarely, the next expensive option is only £12 more. Ironic really. I'll start the switching process tomorrow... like you say - stuff 'em.

Be careful. I wouldn't actively not use Ebico if they were the cheapest.
I mean, which other supplier's MD would actually respond to a complaint personally?
(Praise where praise is due and all that)

However, I wouldn't pay a premium anymore either.

At first sight, for me Scottish Power seems more expensive, but once I factor in the £100 discount for prompt payment (guaranteed if I opt for quarterly payment by DD), they may well be cheaper for me.

I need to do some detailed analysis first, before I make a final decision.

Looks like SP will be getting my electric though (£50 discount for prompt payment and a saving even before this.)

Wonder if I could get a dual fuel discount too

Edit: Yes I can - another £10.50 per year dual fuel discount with Scottish Power :T

Time for me to get out Microsoft Excel to make sure I've got all this right before I jump in with both feet!

Edit 2: Hmmm... £65 dual fuel/£32.50 single fuel discount with quidco (other cashback sites are available!) to switch to SP - looks like I'll be getting more than a measely £12.00 saving

I'll concede on that point; a personal response from the MD is actually very impressive.

Just done some number crunching on EnergyHelpline; if I were to go onto their cheapest dual fuel tariff, I'd be £135 down - dual fuel isn't actually cheaper for me (!!); currently on Ebico for Gas and EDF Online 5 for electric.

If I were to go to Monthly DD (something I'm not overly keen on), I could save £56 with NPower, but frankly, having been with them before, I'm convinced that they couldn't organise a moderately entertaining evening in a brewery.

Ho-hum; maybe I'll stay with Ebico for the time being.

The company bangs on about being non-profit making (although it does make a surplus!) and how it averages out the cost of supply so that all customers are charged equally. If the company can afford to subsidise some customers, that of course has an effect on the price I pay (or decreases the surplus the company makes to donate to charitable causes)

You are making the assumption that it is Ebico that is paying the £12 that has been sent to Ebico PPM customers.

If their explanation, that it was Scottish and Southern Energy's mistake, and that the £12 should only have gone to Scottish and Southern's customers, then it is quite possible that it is Scottish and Southern who are picking up the bill for their mistake.

Before leaping to conclusions you could always ask Ebico who is paying for Scottish and Southern's mistake.

Having been an Ebico customer in the past, my dealings with them highlighted the problem they have having Scottish and Southern as there agents in not supporting them as a separate entity.

I have spoken to S & S call centre staff who have never heard of Ebico, and regard Equipower and Equigas just as another S & S tariff. In fact in effect it is, as you do not go through the change of supplier process if you move from one company to the other.

Yes I am making that assumption. I can only go on the information available.

In the message footyguy posted it, Phil Levermore said:
...I also appreciate that your view is that, as some customers have received a £12 credit and others have not, the net effect of this represents an inequality...

...The very unusual cause of the payment, the prevailing weather and the fact that non-prepay EquiGas customers will see no increase in their energy costs as a result of this, led me to decide that the £12 credit should not be recovered and we should, instead, leave the situation as it was...

Nothing there about SSE footing the bill for this error, despite being a perfect situation to have explained so.

So one could argue that your suggestion is equally an assumption.

A real shame she hasn't decided to post about this issue so that we could clarify the exact position.

Meanwhile, this thread demonstrates just how quickly a company can lose a customer's loyalty (and I'm sure many regulars will know how often I've posted positively about Ebico in the past), but now I've started looking at prices, it looks like I'll probably be switching.

... but there's still time to turn things around Ebico, if you decide you want to. I've not switched yet. But this thread is doing little for your reputation.

Have you looked at single fuel options?

Dual fuel isn't always the cheapest option. Keep with EDF online 5 for electric (as you've presumably chosen them as the cheapest) and just do a comparison on the gas.

I can't see Ebico being £135 cheaper for gas only in any scenario - Ebico favours low users (that's what it says on their website) and so as the usage increases, other suppliers become more competitive (higher profit possibility - also from Ebico website).

You are not allowed to take EDF 5 for just electricity if you also have a gas supply.

    2680 x 5p is £134. So it is possible.

I seem to have managed it somehow; I was on their Online S@ver v1 and called them to ask to move to it when I saw it was cheaper. They agreed, and we're both happy :)

Just to confirm; you're not confusing Online 5 with Online S@ver 5?
