oops, sorry duplicate post,
I received two invoices from 18866, just received this email from them.
Dear 18866 user,
Due to a technical error in our system we accidentally sent out incorrect invoices.
Please ignore these invoices and we apologize for any inconvenience!
Best regards,
The 18866 team

Forgot to add you can also now log into their website.0 -
Two things this little "scare" should bring to people's attention:
1. I now never have any dealings with any company that I am unable to contact directly. That is the main reason I left 18866 5 years ago.
My view is that if they don't want you to contact them (except via e-mail, which they can ignore, or say they never received), then they must either be a one man show, or have something to hide.
2. I learned the hard way that it is NOT a good idea to pay a company using the "continuous payment" method from a credit card. Apparantly, and I still cannot believe this is the case after all these years, YOU CANNOT cancel or stop any payments being taken, only the company can stop the payments.
Yes, you can dispute any payments after they are taken, but you cannot stop a company from taking whatever they request from your credit card.
An absolutely crazy system.
Anyway, I am glad this is all sorted out now. Took way too much of my time yesterday evening.0 -
I've not had any such problems with 18185 (yet!) and logging into my account there, all seems as it should be.
Now, I've seen multiple threads (now merged) for this problem with 18866 and one thread on 1899.
Perhaps this 'technical glitch' only affects those systems? Or perhaps it's because a lot of us affected haven't used them for a long time?"...And I gave that man directions, even though I didn't know the way, 'cause that's the kind of guy I am this week." -- Homer Simpson0 -
OK, the number of posts has apparently established that these phantom invoice emails are being sent by 1899, 18185 and 18866 - which proves they have a combined system of some sort (which isn't surprising as they are all the same company and their business models are almost identical).
I have now received the below:
Now, setting aside the worry and annoyance the emails have caused, the relevant part is whether there have been any erroneous calls for payment from debit/credit cards or direct debits.Dear 18185 user,
Due to a technical error in our system we accidentally sent out incorrect invoices.
Please ignore these invoices and we apologize for any inconvenience!
Best regards,
The 18185 team

Has anyone had that?Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
I'm also having similar problems with 18866
My last invoice (No 8) was dated 27/01/2006 and I cancelled the account with 18866 on the 04/04/2009.
Today 27/7/2010 they sent me an invoice for £3.18.
The invoice had the correct old customer number with an invoice (No 1).
I can't logon as my telephone isn't registered with them any more.
I am concerned that this will happen every month with goodness knows what total they will make up and charge my account, with me being unable to do anything to stop them.
The next problem will be that they won't be able to charge my debit card as it has a new issue number. I expect I will soon receive an email asking me to update my card details, which I will be unable to do because I am unable to logon. I hate to think what they will do then, send round the debt collecting thugs?
I will try what Heinz said and see if I can get a reply.
I think Martin should stop advertising these companies unless they have proper means of resolving issues.0 -

Has anyone managed to get them on their contact phone number 0808 170 1708 ?
Hi I am with 1899 the same company as you are all trying to get hold of.
I posted the following in Feb 2010 hope it helps :
18866 is a Swiss company based in Lugano and although they put a British address on the invoice you will never get a reply.
I have found the best way ( but not the fastest) is google https://www.finarea.ch. Or click link here...
Here you find a web based contact form , you provide your detail ie AC Number and the email address you singed up with. Put your comment and in and about 5 working days you should get a reply. This is the most direct contact there is.:beer:0 -
I haven't used the service for over 5 years. Both my landline and mobile numbers were changed since then. Yesterday I received 6 invoices dated 02-07-2010. I logged in using the old account data and found my current credit card still on the record. I cancelled my subscription, so I can't login any longer.
Guess what, I received a new invoice just now and am afraid they'll gonna charge my card. My credit card company said they'd be able to cancel the transaction *after* the card is charged. I dread to think how much 18866 will charge me until the card is expired!
Has anyone's credit/debit card been charged with such fake bill?0 -
I have now received an email from 18866 saying that there had been an error and I would not be charged. I am posting this in case anyone else needs advice in this direction.
I followed advice in one of the other postings and sent them a 'fault' email, this has prompted the reply above.
I will obviously keep a check on my credit card but it does look like they are trying to do something - unless you know differently!!!
I hope this helps.0 -
Given the known weakness of contacting 18866 and the risk of them taking money in error by DD which is now highlighted by all these false invoices I expect this little problem may well trigger a mass exit of customers and perhaps a demise of the service.
Whilst I am reassured that they have emailed a response it is very worrying is that there website which hasn't been updated in years isn't being used to post an apology in the FAQ section.0
