I'm just glad that other people are telling me that cheap tyres and 2nd hand ones are safe!

    One final point.

I sometimes buy second hand; i have a REALLY close inspection of any tyre i consider buying that way.

Lots of good 2nd hand tyres in scrappys; lots of dangerous ones too, you have to know what to look for.

For you, with your kids in the car, stick to new tyres, for peace of mind.

^ Agree with Mollycat. If you don't know what you're looking for (and some damage can only be seen when the tyre is off the wheel) then it isn't worth the risk to go for second hand tyres. As a personal thing, I tried to buy mid-rage tyres whenever I replaced mine, unless there was a more expensive tyre on special. Even then, it depended on the tyre and the tread pattern more than anything else.

The better grip a tyre gives, the faster it wears out

Well it's swings and roundabouts, having more grip is a good thing, it could prevent you from having an accident, or getting stuck somewhere.
Some tyres give fantastic grip on dry roads but are useless in the wet. Some will give you better grip in snow/ice/water ("winter" tyres) but will be noisier on dry roads. Some tyres will give better fuel ecomeny over others.

Also you might have one tyre that costs £50 and will last 20,000miles and another costing £70 that will last 50,000miles (or vice versa!)

A lot depends on what car it is, what you use it for, how many miles you do, how long you plan to keep it for etc

Personally, I go for something budget/mid range, unless it's on one of my bikes, when grip is everything.

But no matter what tyre you buy you can still get a puncture tomorrow :rotfl:

I think there's a law about that. And the likelihood of the puncture increases in direct relation to the purchase price of the tyre :)

From personal experiance, I got 16,000 miles from a set of Michelens, but 37,000 from a set of budgets. This was on a Citreon Xantia TD. The tyres were from a local independant with a superb reputation.

    A work colleague had 4 wheels re-balanced at Kwik-fit, cost him £16.

Nitrogen is lighter than air (by about 10%), so will decrease your fuel use, also, the molecules of nitrogen are larger than those of oxygen so there is a reduced risk of leaks.

Air is 70 odd % Nitrogen. The advantages of using Nitrogen aren't that massive that anyone will notice in normal use. And I'm a bit dubious about how you can reduce the risk of a leak by using N2. A dodgy valve will still let the gas out. The only sort of leak this would stop would be over a very long time by gas escaping through the carcass of the tyre....

Not sure what you're asking. Part worn means exactly that. the tyres have been used. There could be 5mm of tread left on them, or there could only be 2mm. As a consequence, it's hard to put a price on them. How much can you get new ones for?
