And the incident I mentioned with the "red" tyres was Volvo, part of the same group- possibly the same policies.
I would seriously recommend an independent check before you go any further!
Yeah I'll have them checked first, thank you for sharing your experience! I just didn't want to be driving around with bald tyres, especially with 2 very young kids in the car (the kids are the main reason I want to have them replaced as I don't want to put them in any danger. I won't take them out in the car when it's snowy but I have to take my youngest to see a specialist but will definitely get them checked first before replacing them!) and the winter checks the police are doing are quite strict...apparently you get 3 points if your screenwash is frozen/run out!Started PADdin' 13/04/09 paid £7486.66 - CC free 02/11/10

What size are the tyres?
Try www.blackcircles.com
There might also be garages (or scrapyards) in your area that sell part worn tyres. With one of my old cars it was so bad on tryes it was scrubbing one each month £11 at the scrappy and it would be sorted until the next monthThat was until I found £150 to get the tracking done and all 4 tyres replaced with cheapos - only had to replace one then in the next 18 months (puncture)
I think they're 16.5
ETA - I just went out to check and they're 16, not 16.5Started PADdin' 13/04/09 paid £7486.66 - CC free 02/11/10

the size will be four parts
width, some where between 135 & 235
profile, somewhere between 40 & 70
diameter in inches, some where between 12 & 17
and load/speed rating, normally letters
example 225/40 R17 98Y0 -

The very best price we've had is in Alness & they are quick.
The garage is just behind the High St. They wholesale tyres to other garages, but fit them. It's always busy - which is a good sign, but for the life of me I can't remember their name - it's something like true tread. They have a car assessory shop on the main st & the garage is at the back.
Good Tread? http://www.goodtread.com/
I usually go to Inverness Tyre service down the carse. And there's Budget over on millburn rd, usually good prices but not as good service0 -

There's also the Kwik fit over on Longman Road but like I said, I didn't know where to go!
Vaio the numbers on the tyres are 208 55 R 16 but Blackcircles couldn't find me any tyres like that...will any speed rating do as they can find tryres with any speed rating?
