    Hi all, :)

I've added thsi query onto an earlier thread to help keep all the answers in one place.

I'd agree - going brown isn't normally a problem - but smelling nasty certainly is.

I would take it back to Asda if its within date but off. They should refund you. I have done this before with chicken which stank so bad that opening it made me retch! And it was well within date. Take the offending product back to the customer service desk, they would rather refund you than have you stadning around with stinking meat in their shop!

I'd agree - I've had to do this with both Asda and Tesco.. in this case Asda came up trumps.. it stank so badly they not only gave me my money back and told me to get another chicken (which Tesco also did) but Asda also told me to get not just an equivalent chicken, but the largest, most expensive one i could find. Which is not bad considering i'd only bought a medium battery chicken to begin with (this was a few years back !). we dined very very well for the next few days, i got a lovely huge organic chicken that tasted absolutely fantastic. and it didn't cost me a penny!

so yup, its worth taking it back!

  • Might be a silly question but....

I have just got some meet out from the fridge to put it my slow cooker and the top of it (lamb) has gone a bit brown.

Is it still safe to eat.

I did notice it had gone a bit when I put it in the freezer (still had 2 or 3 days left before use by) and should have reallly taken it back to the shop then.

I really dony know whether to chance it or not??

    Any advice appriciated.

  • Hi there  If the meat smells OK it's probably fine to eat. The "browning" is natural oxidation ;)

I'll add this to an older thread on the same subject to keep ideas together.

  • I have some tesco lean mince beef and the use by date is today, I'm a bit worried as it has went quite a brown colour instead of the normal pink / red when you buy it.
Do you think it will still be ok to eat? Don't want to give my family food poisoning
    thanks x

  • It just smells a bit fatty iykwim? I think I might just cook something else because it's so brown I can't see if it's browning or not which worries me, thanks though - note to self when OH suggests takeaway freeze the mince for later in the week!

if it smells like vinegary or sweaty feet ,I would ring Tesco and get money back if its still in date
Dont go by colour though as I find the bright red colour of some supermarket meat really artificial anyway
Trust the nose ,the nose knows best ;)
