  • I bought some mince from Asda on Friday and it's best by date is today, it's gone brown, and I'm cooking it right now. It is alright isn't it? :o

If it doesn't smell very nice, I don't think I'd eat it! I believe they put preservatives in with the mince to make it stay that "red" colour and if its gone brown its not a good sign.

Find a dog to give it to!!;)
  • if it doesn't smell nice I wouldn't use it. I always think that brown mince has a funny 'sweet' smell and I won't use it.

  • I've had to go over the road for a couple of frozen pizzas.
    Didn't have anything else in.
This is a lesson in the importance of menu planning.

Actually it goes brown due to the blood draining out and oxidisation..

I think beef stinks anyway.. not quite as nasty as lamb.. I'd have tasted a bit first.. one nibble won't kill you

  • I'm normally not so nesh about beef, but it really smelled bad, and I was having a pregnant lady cry when hubby came in and he agreed that whatever the smell emanating from the kitchen was, it was very bad indeed.
I'm feeling very wasteful and bad housewifey, but have just heard my breadmaker beep to announce it's finished so I don't care. Stupid mince.

If it smells bad, its off. That rule applies to pretty much any food.

The brown colour itself is not an indication of the meat being off, could be just oxidation.

I would take it back to Asda if its within date but off. They should refund you. I have done this before with chicken which stank so bad that opening it made me retch! And it was well within date. Take the offending product back to the customer service desk, they would rather refund you than have you stadning around with stinking meat in their shop!
  • You aren't a bad anything - you were being safe which is better than serving it and you being ill - particularly with you being pregnant.
