  • I'd like to join in! With my DD's becoming vegan I've had to get out of cooking ruts just to make food they can eat. I'm not sure any recipes I try will be too much use to others unless they are vegan, or maybe vegetarian, but anyways here's 1 I tried this week...

    http://cleangreensimple.com/2011/03/vegan-grilled-cheese/

I didn't have nutritional yeast, so omitted that and used a spoonful of miso instead. I also didn't have the roasted peppers, but it seemed fine without it. My lemon juice may have just been more concentrated than the recipe's but I next time I would half the amount for it. Kids enjoyed the toasties, very flavorful though you wouldn't fool anyone that it was actually cheese they were eating, but then again none of the fake cheeses we have bought have been that good, and they are very expensive for a big household like ours so I'm pleased I've been able to make substitute at home. With some tweaking I believe I could use this for pasta sauce, topping for pizza etc.
No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!

I love to cook and try new thing out, so count me in too :j

When I try new things out I have often found the recipe on this site: Eat your books

The site have indexed a lot of cookbooks - quite useful if you own a lot of cookbooks ( like I do) - but the site have also indexed 49 blogs and a lot of magazines

It is free to join( with some limitations) and it is possible to use the search engine without joining at all - there are links to almost 79 000 online recipes

I'm definitely up for this - I've got a shelf full of cookbooks and keep thinking that I must use them for something! :o My favourite website for recipes is the BBC Good Food one - www.bbcgoodfood.com - I've had some cracking ideas off there, although of course also a few disappointing ones (a braised pork dish sticks in my mind - the gravy came out as a lake of oil and had to go, and the pork was only just rescuable :().

Embarrassingly, my new 'recipe' for this week isn't a recipe at all - it's a curry wrap meal kit, but at only 33p from AF I think I can justify it! Hopefully this thread will keep going for a while and I can post a proper OS recipe next week. ;)
Back after a very long break!

I'll give this a go - how hard can one new recipe a month be?:D

    So... *clears throat* Hi, I'm Wolfy, and I'm a stuck-in-a-rut cook.:D

I'm a vegetarian who actually dislikes cooking, but refuse to feed my husband rubbish. He's good enough to eat veggie food at home, even though he's not actually a veggie (I can't cook meat or fish, simply can't bring myself to handle it_pale_), so I owe it to him to make him tasty meals.

I have a shelf full of books, including ones on potatoes, coffee, garlic, and, believe it or not, cooking with beer, so I must set to and get some new dins ideas going.;)

Unfortunately I have a super crop of mouth ulcers at the moment, so this week is going to be soft food/soup, but I'm sure I can find a soup recipe I haven't attempted before.:o
If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)
  • Well, I made the bread! I liked it, but half the loaf is still in the kitchen so clearly I didn't like it that much! I am thinking that with a couple of tweaks it will be amazing though.

Next recipe will be tortilla soup. Although I think it's cheating slightly as I use the cookbook its from ALL the time. It's Appetite for Reduction, in case anyone is interested! It's an American book, aimed at vegans, and has some great recipes. Everything I have made from it has tasted great which is always a good sign. Don't you just hate it when you have spent ages following a recipe and it tastes so-so?

Made this a couple of days ago but instead of using pork ribs I used chicken wings as we had some in the freezer. It was very easy to do with not too many ingredients although some of them were not your everyday store cupboard (yellow bean paste and shaohsing rice wine) had no runny honey so substituted golden syrup. http://www.channel5.com/shows/chinese-food-in-minutes/clips/sweet-and-sour-wuxi-pork-ribs

I enjoyed it and will do it again however it is NOT like any sweet & sour sauce I have ever had before. A wet cloth would be a good 'side dish' to serve with this.:rotfl:We had it with boiled rice and some salad.

Why embarrasingly, I am OS born and bred, and as taught me by my Nan, the most frugal practical lady I have ever met, make the most of what you have or can get and the name of the game is to feed your family as well as you can, bless her she lived through two world wars, rationing whatever and my most profound memories of her is that I was extremely well and enjoyably fed.

  • Recent challenges undertaken include:
    Sweetcorn Pancakes, mastered at last!
Black Bean Sauce with Black Beans authentic easy to make and a great Tasty Sauce.
Bircher Muesli, quick and well worth it.
Char Sui Pork, tricky to cook but well worth it, the Marinade is dead easy to make and will make Chinese Takeway seem bland and tasteless.
Aubergine and Red Pepper Stir Fry using Homemade Black Bean Sauce as before.
Instant Rice Noodle Soup using Ready made Wing Yip Sauce for an oriental creamy noodly soup.
Bread slice quiche (tasty white bread works best and is nicest)
Jamaican Rice and Peas an outright success, cheap and oh so repeatable.
Peanut Butter Chilli Butternut Squash (delicious a total winner!)
Homemade Raspberry and Lime Juice Lollies a total fruity citrus success that at last puts me into Ice Lolly land by faithfully repeating the recipe.
Cauliflower and Chickpea Indian Rice for tonight.
