Penny, the roast veg and brown rice gratin looks fabulous... but is it a bit of a faff to make? How long did it take you?
    Man plans and God laughs...
Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.

It was more of a faff than I was expecting, but now that I've done it I can do it more quickly next time ;) I was probably actually doing stuff for about 20-30 mins (not counting the time the veg was roasting and the final dish was in the Rayburn).

It's good for me for 2 reasons:
    • we need more veggie recipes :T
    • I can prepare it the night before I go to work, and the children can put it into the oven for a hot meal as soon as I'm home :T

Alright, I've decided I'm going to do this recipe this week: http://www.foodnetwork.ca/recipes/Main/Fish/recipe.html?dishid=679

Just to see how I can work to a JO recipe. I'm still looking through recipe books to see if I can find some more. Thought I'd start simply. :)

    Mortgage-free Glee!
OK I've tried two new recipes today (although the second arose from the first!)
My DIL's Mum gave me a book of Swabian cookery at Christmas. Today DS and I tried maultaschen for lunch ( basically large filled ravioli in a broth). I treated myself to a pasta maker last week so this was a case of killing two birds with one stone! I discovered that the pasta dough needs to be much thinner than I ever thought possible! We made a stuffing with a little minced and fried bacon, onion and mushroom and added the meat from a few sausages and a chili (not strictly in the recipe but we had one in the fridge..) The ravioli were then cooked in the chicken broth for a bit more than 20 minutes (wanted to be absolutely sure the filling was properly cooked!) I'm glad it wasn't a meal for company, but the results were passable - the real problem was with the pasta dough, the filling was great!
Anyway we had too much stuffing, so this evening I made pockets in chicken breasts, stuffed them with the leftover filling and wrapped them in parma ham. Quickly browned then cooked in oven for about 20 minutes. Lovely!
So, not strictly following a recipe, but new to me - hope that counts!
    Resolution:
    Think twice before spending anything!

I cooked a shoulder of lamb from the freezer yesterday as we were too snowed in to get to the butchers on Saturday. DH used up the rest in a Shepherds Pie today we normally use minced beef in SP so this was different, I have roped him and DD into this challenge as we take it in turns to cook. DD is trying to get out of it as she is not an adventurous cook but no chance. I have told them it's got to be different and healthy at least one new meal a week.
