Edinburgher's balancing act

edinburgher wrote: »Good thinking there Pickle. At the moment I'm sticking to three meals a day (small breakfast and lunch and normal dinner), but I am allowing myself a packet of oatcakes (6-7 oatcakes) a day and a couple of bananas. I think oatcakes are meant to be a fairly healthy source of low GI energy, but they do contain some of the dreaded sat fats! While I'm not trying to starve myself, I do realise that some hunger will be necessary to lose weight. After all, I haven't been hungry in 4 years or so
I agree about the trying to eat 3 solid meals as I don't know about you, but I'm a complete beggar for grazing inbetween meals.
Oatcakes...can you tell our Ed is Scottish?! :rotfl: I don't quite know what to suggest instead instead that would avoid the sat fats (Ryvita? I wouldn't eat those myself, so don't take that seriously!) Bananas are good for making you feel full but beware eating too many due to the high levels of potassium (not good for the heart), so consider other fruits or cut up veg (carrotts, cucumber or even - yuk - celery) which will help get your 5-a-day as well.
Here endeth the lecture. (I just read that back and it sounds quite preachy. Sorry!)

When I first mentioned getting fit, my little sister (a running fanatic) suggested that I take part in my local park run (a sociable running group that does 5km around a local park every Saturday), which I thought would challenge me to be more sociable and to exercise.
Could be good. Is there a running club near you for evenings in the week as well, perhaps? Please call me 'Pickle'

I prefer to get my running done Fri/Sat/Sun mornings and to stick to walking during the week. As I work 8-5:30 I'm normally too tired to exercise in the evenings.0 -

I love Fridays off! Had breakfast, cleaned out the fridge and now just waiting for the shopping to be delivered.
Off to my local small town today to pick up some interesting cooking stuff (chorizo for a chilli con carne next week, duck eggs to be cured for some Chinese cookery and some other goodies). Will probably take time to buy a coffee and read the paper when I'm out. Also need to buy a watering can, as my employer has decided that they're no longer paying to have the plants in our office tended - it seems a rotten shame to let 20-30 tubs of plants on our floor alone die, no?
Weighed in at 14 stone 7 lbs this morning, which is my second milestone after getting my BMI below 30. Next target remains 14 stone by the end of April and we'll see how things stand then
Have a good day all!0 -

How mean! Well done on being such a good plant-carer. You are going to have to try hard to get them all done, and I guess they will need a big drink on Thursdays to get the through the weekend. If they aren't prepared to look after plants, they should have got fake ones. Or cacti, which are very low maintenance.
Well done on the weight loss. I am not very motivated at all, so I have goen 0. I think my get up and go may have got up and gone! Please call me 'Pickle'

The funny thing is - I'm really not. My boss and another colleague have started caring for the plants and to be honest, I found it a bit silly at first.
Still, I admire people who stick to things and have been won over. My boss is a funny teetotal vegetarian who only eats organic food and was wowed by my revelation that you can make a diluted mix of coffee grounds and lukewarm water to act as a rudimentary plant fertiliser rich in nitrogen! So, we're now in an international development office voluntarily watering plants with organic fertiliser made from Fairtrade coffee remnants - are we hippies or what?!
Very pleased to announce that I have passed my first credit check in 5+ years. I applied for a £0 contract with 3 (settled by Direct Debit at the end of each month) and was successful. If I'm truthful, I haven't heard great things about 3, but if I send 5-10 texts a month it'll be no dearer than my current pay-as-you go account and will be a great shot in the arm for my credit score. Who knows, maybe I'll have a real current account, credit card and mortgage before I'm 50 after all?0 -
