This company have been recommended many times on this forum. My brother bought one of their firm mattresses 5 years ago and he absolutely loves it. It is still very firm 5 years on:

    http://cgi6.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItems&userid=concept-wohnen&ssPageName=STRK:MEFSX:MESOI

The mattresses are about £200 delivered

This is the one he bought, viskose dream:

I wouldn't buy any mattress that wasn't made in the UK. It's one of the few things we still do best.

Well why don't you post a link to where I can get a better mattress.

I buy things based on reviews and experience, not based on "the UK has always been best so I am going to continue buying UK stuff".

Because I'm not allowed, as it could be viewed as advertising.

It's not a case of I think British is best. I'm in the trade and I wouldn't sell foreign mattresses because most of the world don't make then as good as they do in the UK. I sell to loads of people who have holiday homes all over Europe because they say that mattresses on the continent are very expensive and poor quality.

As for reviews, many review sites are full of fake reviews.

I agree about the European mattresses! I've had an Ikea disaster!

After a very boring day in Dreams and on eBay/Google the search has been narrowed to

    1) La Romantica Madrid
    2) Kozeesleep Max Pocket

If ANYONE has had any problems with either of the above please, plase post ASAP!

I don't want to buy another mattress for a very long time!

tim - you confuse me in the fact that you say stay away from the big shops and visit the independants.
yesterday i went to both dreams and an independant large bed shop - the latter was the dearest by far for similar quality same make bed!

i have seen silentnight, sleepeezee, reylon, myers, comfilux amongst others. and why would i buy on line? surely you need to test these beds before you buy?

A visit to a back specialis is essential to find out the exact cause of the problem. If the mattress in the spare room is a Silentnight, then after a few months use they could end up with more problems.

Why would silent night specifically cause problems?

Also you don't need to advertise your site to recommend a good brand or type of mattress. Sometimes I get really fed up of experts on this site telling us that what we are buying is rubbish and that there is something far better out here without telling us what - happens all the time with kitchens, bathrooms, carpets and now this!

    Rant over!

  • To be fair, the advice Tim gas given in this and other thread seems to be consistant with all other advice I've received from the trade (except Dreams!) so I for one am glad he's on the board.

I was offered advice even though I'm in N Ireland, and Tims firm doesn't deliver here.
