    1) Its exactly the same Torx screw set- both Chrome Vanadium Steel (whatever that is). Halfords just sell them for 3 times the price.

    2) At 0.64p per cable tie doesnt it make sense to buy 200 at £1.20 from screwfix instead of 5 for £1.59 from halfords. Stick them in the shed and they'll keep you going for a few years.

Im not trying to be a wise guy here but its really hard to justify the ridiculous prices halfords charge for really inexpensive items like cable ties!!

have you used both sets of torx bits over a prolonged period of time? only then can you really say if they are good, but having been bitten by plenty of cheap poor quality tools in my time i know what im talking about. chrome vanadium doesnt mean they are the same quality.
the cable ties are expensive, but who goes to halfords for cable ties at that price? to other guy that mentioned them probably picked them out of a sale bin in store.

Funny that because online halfords are advertising a massive box full of just 5 black 100mm cable ties for £1.59!!!

Thats a budget busting 32p each... but oh wait... screwfix sell 100 for 64p!!! Thats!! Oh my god!!! 0.64p each!!! 50 times cheaper!!!!!!

    1 - 0 :)

I think your goal has been disallowed, as quite clearly you haven't beaten the price I paid, you've taken the idioits guide to research and used either the market leader, or google

This is exactly my point - Halfords is cheap if you know what you're looking for, when to look, and more importantly WHERE. I paid 50p for a box of 1000 cable ties. Technically it was 5 boxes of 200 ties, at 10p a box, but the principles the same as I picked up 5 boxes.

From experience, I knew that the week between Xmas and New Year, my local Halfords has a "blue cross" sale, with loads of items chucked in a selection of trays at ridiculously cheap prices. Thus, I went along and snapped up a variety of things.

HOWEVER, I'm not saying Halfords is cheaper than everywhere else - I'm saying not to just write it off altogether.

Oh Ok, I do like a challenge. Torx set including the sizes you speak of...

£21.99 for a 7 piece set at Halfords

(you're going to kick yourself... )

£7.99 for a 9 piece set from this website here

There are so many flaws in your choice here, but I'll continue to discount it nonetheless.

    1) you've picked up a 3/8th set as your cheap example, meaning little toy connectors that'll bend/break as soon as you put any decent amount of pressure. You've picked up the correct 1/2" Halfords set though, albeit at full price (which is not often what is charged). I paid £14.99 for that same set, and then £8.99 for a (1/2" fitment) 24" extension ("breaker") bar. Would you like me to scan the receipts when I get home? I have them still as I put the items through the books for work :p

    2) The item you've listed doesn't come with lifetime warranty. The Halfords "Professional" range of tools, whether they are 1 day old or 10 years, will be replaced FOC if broken/damaged at all. The only items you'll find that come close to that are Snap-On & MAC tools. Try looking up prices for those ;)

    3) P&P on your selection is £12 nearly, Halfords are based in pretty much every major town & city, and have regular "free P&P" discounts, as well as voucher codes/sale prices/discounts. No contest.

seriously, i think your arguments are serously flawed. I've not challenged you to go beat Halford's prices, because in all honesty almost every published price on every website or in every shop all over the world will probably be beaten at some stage or other, be it by the use of a voucher or by a price reduction/discount.

You've obviously got a grudge against Halfords. Fair do's, it's your choice. I'll just let you get on with buying cheap quality 3/8 tools and let you get on with your own little world and the smug feeling that comes with you thinking you know best ;)

lol you posted whilst I was typing my essay to the idiot who thinks because he can read the words "Chrome Vanadium" he knows tools better than people who've used them almost every day for the last god-knows-how-long. Yes I got the cable ties from the discount bin. That was my point. Halfords (and anywhere else for that matter) can be the cheapest and best place to go, if you know WHEN to go, WHERE to look, and WHAT to look for.

my best purchase to date from halfords has to be the flexi head ratchet spanners from the pro range. they retail usually at £79.99 i got them when they were on offer for £49.99 honestly the best spanners ive ever owned, i use them to extremes every day and have never failed me.

I've seen those and thought they looked pretty good, but thankfully/sadly (however you choose to look at it) I've not had the need to replace my last set, which were second hand MAC jobbies.

I bought a socket wrench set with extendable arm......... 15 quid reduced from I think 50. Very happy but highly doubt Iwould pay 50.....seemed excellent quality (pro range) would probably pay 25 tops.

Which means you've answered your question from your original post - "are Halfords good value?"

but if you had to rely on them day in day out and they never gave up then they would be well worth the £50. would they not?

There was a batch of Halfords breaker bars that had an issue with the top end shearing off, but I haven't seen that happen for a while. Definitely my favoured brand for hand tools, especially since I have the trade card.
