Cheers I thought it would be unlikley but I panic a bit! First time we flew long haul we didnt realise you had to do the whole on line checkin thing and obv got there and didnt have seats together I put the water works on (drama queen I know haha) and they all of a sudden found us a pair together. Probs wont even get the chance to get them anyway but thought I would ask. :)

Don't let the scaremongering get to you, really, I have only once been moved from my requested seat and that was because of a plane change. VS do everything they can to keep people together. Don't forget that big bird holds over 500 people and there is always a way of making sure you sit together (unless you don't bother checking in till the last minute in the hope that you get an upgrade)

We were moved out of pairs at the back once - though we were seated together in the new seats...it was some time before the day of the flight though - noticed when I (rather obsessively) checked our seats online...we were maaaaad even though we know they are always requests, not guaranteed...it only happened once and we had them several times with no issue.

We have also had the option to pay (£30 each I think) for them at check-in, though it's been awhile so that may have changed.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Also if you havent checked in within 13 hours of the flight scheduled departure time, your seat requests are removed, so if you are in a group, you could very well be split up

Thanks penny - I never knew that...because I am paranoid we always check in online in Vegas either via laptop in the room or internet cafe/business centre because I can relax more once that's done. Someone at Virgin check-in in Vegas once said that if you've checked in online it's nearly impossible for them to move you from your seats.

We usually book our flights into LA and drive to Vegas now for the following reasons….
    1. Flights are almost always cheaper
    2. Planes are newer Airbus A340-600 which have a 2 / 4 / 2 seat configuration meaning the plane is 2 seats all down the left and right hand side of the plane
    3. Plane has video-on-demand/games
    4. We always hire a car in Vegas anyway
    5. Usually fly on Friday or Saturday and spend a night or two in Anaheim/LA heading to Vegas on the Sunday when the room rates drop drastically.
    6. We stop at the Fashion Outlets at Primm on the way to Vegas
    7. Flight back from LA is at 20:55 meaning you have plenty of time to drive back.
    8. Most people are leaving Vegas on Sunday
The drive takes about 3.5 hours, but Primm is an hour outside of Vegas and you can stop there for a bite to eat and a shop.

It may not be everyone’s idea of fun, but it works for us.

    all very good points,
its a nice feeling driving against the traffic into vegas iwth everyone else driving back to la

My BA flight was in Oct 04, was checkin in and the bloke said theres no seats left, i jokingly asked for first class :) but they gave me that plus section (Premuim econemy), chair reclined a bit and was big and comfy ! :):)
All BA flights after that were always in bum class :) Same for the virgin flight to Newark.....

oh and if i didnt get on the virgin plane which is on the 3rd June, there isn't another flight that day, so given i booked to fly on the 3rd, then if they oversell seats, i assume that they have to put us in the available seats, whether it be first class, business or the pilots chair ? :D
Theres no way in the world would i accept flying the next day, would defeat the object of booking on the friday! and surely airlines cant get away with doing that ?

They can and do oversell planes. They will ask for volunteers with an incentive eg 50,000 miles to change dates. Then if not enough volunteers, they pick on some poor sods with a wedding to go to!!!

They can and they do, IMO it is better to check in online and get to the airport on time. Its still your choice though
