I selected the 2 seats at the back aswell for our flight with Virgin next May and am sure there was no extra charge, will these seats be guaranteed or does it depend on when you check in?

Virgin don't charge and your seats should be guranteed unless they have to change them for whatever reason (different plane, overbooked etc). Even the BA ones aren't guranteed when you pay for them but they do refund you if you don't get the seat.

i was hoping me and my partner could be the last to check in on the virgin flight.........
because i assume they overbook, fill the seats, so the only seats left would most likely be business or 1st class ? :D:D:D
It happened to me once before on a BA flight to NYC, ended up in World Traveller Plus, was well impressed!

Crikey, impressed with WT+, first time I have heard that lol
It is usually Prem. Economy on that flight that is full because you get to sit in the bubble. And at £4,000+ for an upper seat you ain't gonna get upgraded to that. Priorty always goes first to Gold card holders on a fully fleible ticket, then just Golds, then Silver on a fully fleible and so on. All that is likely to happen if you are the last to checkin is you will be split up
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

If you havent checked in online and you are last to check in, you may not get on the flight and be bumped to the next one.

i believe these seats are reserved for you, until a few hours (don't know exactly) after online check-in has opened.

They are not reserved, just seat "requests"...you could be moved at anytime, keep checking in manage your booking

Also if you havent checked in within 13 hours of the flight scheduled departure time, your seat requests are removed, so if you are in a group, you could very well be split up

Also remember, the seats at the back also means being last in the long immigration queue

We usually book our flights into LA and drive to Vegas now for the following reasons….
    1. Flights are almost always cheaper
    2. Planes are newer Airbus A340-600 which have a 2 / 4 / 2 seat configuration meaning the plane is 2 seats all down the left and right hand side of the plane
    3. Plane has video-on-demand/games
    4. We always hire a car in Vegas anyway
    5. Usually fly on Friday or Saturday and spend a night or two in Anaheim/LA heading to Vegas on the Sunday when the room rates drop drastically.
    6. We stop at the Fashion Outlets at Primm on the way to Vegas
    7. Flight back from LA is at 20:55 meaning you have plenty of time to drive back.
    8. Most people are leaving Vegas on Sunday
The drive takes about 3.5 hours, but Primm is an hour outside of Vegas and you can stop there for a bite to eat and a shop.

It may not be everyone’s idea of fun, but it works for us.

Whilst were on the subject of the 2 seats at the back of virgin plane... I know there not 100% yours like any seat but are you more likley to get moved from these 2 than if you booked 2 on a row of four? Only asking as were looking to book our flights for next Sept as soon as they are avalible and if we are lucky enough to get a set of 2 we would reserve them but Im not a good traveller so wouldnt want to get them and then be split up that would be my worst nightmare (not sure it would be the hubbys though haha) :)

Don't let the scaremongering get to you, really, I have only once been moved from my requested seat and that was because of a plane change. VS do everything they can to keep people together. Don't forget that big bird holds over 500 people and there is always a way of making sure you sit together (unless you don't bother checking in till the last minute in the hope that you get an upgrade)
