  • I don't plan anything special especially after all the xmas food! Although I didn't know about the steak pie tradition but that's what I'm having for tea. :-)

Just making a lamb roast for family and a quorn roast for me. One of the few times I miss not eating meat. I can smell the lamb in the oven and it smells delicious, though just couldn't bring myself to eat it.

    Hi Dougl

It's definitely a Scottish thing. When I lived in Scotland, all the supermarkets and shops were always full of various sizes of steak pies at New Year, but this doesn't seem to be the case here in West Yorkshire.

I can always remember my Mum having turkey at Christmas and then the steak pie dinner with all the trimmings (usually home made soup for a starter and trifle for dessert) lol.

She did quite often have a lovely home made steak pie at other times throughout the year, but it was always tradition at New Year.

I've never been able to face steak pie for a few years now ever since I had a bad case of food poisoning! (not my mother's cooking, I hasten to add! lol

No it's not a Scottish thing only in some parts of Scotland as I've said before.

I'm near Aberdeen and it was all steak pies in the supermarkets in the days leading up to the New Year. We wanted a turkey crown but couldn't get one - it was all pies.

There may well be steak pies in the supermarket but this has never been a tradition in this area for New Year, however they are always popular.

I have to say that it's been a tradition up this way for years. Maybe you just weren't aware of it. ;)
