They wont so its not even worth the effort trying. Their liability has ended at the warranty. Sony did used to do free repair/refurb replacement, but they ended this after the first 2 or so years as the price of units tumbled. Thousands have tried i your situation and i have never even heard so much of a rumour that anyone has succeeded in a free repair from them since. quite simply because there is no reason that they should.

So do start looking for a local repair. no more than £50 and you have a ps3 as good as new.

    Hello 4743.

Thankyou for your comment,However i will give it a try,as i said who knows what might happen, there is an incident on this very board where someone very recently had his unit replaced after he prooved that there was an inherant fault.

All he had to do was get a report that stated that the fault was not of his own making,he did so and i believe that it cost him about £30.00 and he got his unit replaced and a refund of the report money.

I guess its a case of not being fobbed off with them saying no,and doing your own thing to proove otherwise,im in no hurry, time is definately not pressing on me.

Google ps3 YLOD and you will see just how many other people are having this very same issue.

I will however let you all know the outcome good or bad.

Someone else just said that exact same peculiar phrase - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=2174485 - post #4...

You've already posted in the wrong thread once... are you having a mental failure or something? Oh, wait, I get it, it's a "funny thing" going around. Whenever someone says "brought" instead of "bought", someone asks "where did you bring it from". Right...

Agreed. I am also getting really, really bored with people with nothing to offer but yet seek to criticise the grammar of others. Don't they all think they are funny....

i did, until recently, have it in my signature for nearly a year, so please don't start saying i'm copying some emerging trend of picking people up on spelling things wrongly.

I will however let you all know the outcome good or bad.

I am well aware of YLOD and its causes. For example, did you know the ball park figures of a ps3 getting YLOD in the first 3 years is 3-6%. As opposed to RROD on the 360 which the same research points to 20-30%.

Also, RROD is a very specific fault, where as YLOD is a generic error message that could and DOES correspond to hundreds of faults. And seeing as SONY wont divulge the details of YLOD we dont know if a single fault occurs more than others. So those others you mention with he same problems are meaning less. Its like saying if you had a ford car with a fault, and lots of other ford cars have fault of any nature, not the same of yours, and you claiming or trying to claim the fault you have is inherent because of the unrelated faults.....

As for your reference to another thread, your partially correct in that they did get a replacement, this is under the sale of goods act 1979 (see consumer direct for more info). And it is your right to a remedy BUT and this is the crucial BUT........ SOGA ONLY applies to RETAILERS. NOT THE MANUFACTURER.

This means unfortunately for you, you have lost these rights, they do not transfer to Sony and as i have said they will not even entertain your requests.

As you can see i am fully aware of SOGA and all of your rights, but as the retailer is bust, and you didn't use credit to purchase the ps3, you are well and truly stuck with zero rights.

If you don't wish to believe me then that's OK, you can waste your time and money on calling Sony and getting nowhere. Or you could get on with it and get a repair from a local shop.

As I stated, consumer direct have a lot more info on SOGA, read up on it, although it will prove my advice correct in this case, it will come in handy in the future.

Good luck no matter what though.
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

    Hello again 4743

Once again i do thankyou for your advice, and i will once again say what i ahve said before,i dont hold out a lot of hope that Sony will replace the unit in fact im pretty sure that they wont, but i will give it a try.

I have already gone out and brought a new slim Ps3 on boxing day,so the replacement it not at all a need, just a .......Chance,maybe.

I dont know a lot about the SOGA,infact i know a lot more about it now thanks to posters like yourself and others, however please dont tell me to waste my time or money if i wish, because that choice is mine.

Please dont take my words as in some way nasty or ungrateful,i merely want to give it a shot,if it works then ok,if not then ok,thats all.

You also stated that i may not believe you, well being new to these boards and new to the SOGA its not really about who to believe or not its about giving it a bloody good try regardless.

    Thankyou once again.

    Hello again all.

I would like to pass on my thanks to all of you that gave such good advice, and i thought i would give you a quick update regarding the YOD on my old PS3.

I phoned Sony support centre today and got chatting to a lovely lady, she was most considerate and after going through the problem i had she asked me if i could perform a few checks whilst we were on the phone.I performed these checks and i told the woman that they were of little help and the yellow light was still there.

She asked me when and where i had purchased the unit from, she also asked how i had paid for it,she then asked me to perform one more test, which did not work, and whilst i was on the phone,(on hold) for about four minutes, she told me that they were prepared to have a look at the Ps3 for me and a courier will be picking it up from my house on Wednesday.

Although i was a little relieved at this point, she did say that they would have the unit in for test to see what the problem was,but because it was out of warranty she could not guarentee that Sony would be able to replace it or fix it for free and that i may end up paying a charge for it,she also stated that before any repair would take place they would phone me and ask me if i would like to go ahead with the repair or not.

I guess that it is worth a call in the end..because although they may have to charge??? to fix it it may not be as much as a replacement, which i already have having brought a new Ps3 on Boxing day.we will have to see what they are prepared to do.

So although i have had some good advice on here,i have also had advice that said dont bother, suck it up and pay for a new one or a reconditioned unit.Personally i say give it a go you never know what you might achieve.

I will let you all know how much it will be,or if they will just replace it.

Just a quick update as regards my Ps3,this update is for the people who are getting that dreaded YLOD and have been told to suck it up and cover the cost because its out of warranty.

I phoned sony and they sent a courier to collect the unit,i recieved a phonecall from Sony yesterday, they have told me that the unit is repairable and that repair will cost me the sum of £16.00,would i like to go ahead with the repair?

They told me that it was a faulty component on the Blu ray drive! i was so close to just getting a refurb: model but i thought hey i will give it a go and see what happens which i did,and i am glad about it.

so if you get the YLOD dont just settle for the refurb model at £149.00,phone Sony outline your problem and who knows it might just be something so simple.

The repair is being done this week and i should have the unit back by the end of this week, early next.

    Try

You never know what happens,a big thankyou to Sony :j

    Oh by the way.

The original problem with the Ps3 was that it was not reading the disc,i did google this and there seemed to be hundreds of people getting the same issue.

The Ps3 was out of warranty,it came from Zavvi that is now defunct, and i paid cash.

It was worth a phone call and £16.00.

    Thankyou all for your advice.

    Hello all.

As you can see this is my very first post after looking on this site for many months,so here is my problem and i hope that someone can help me out.

Sony playstation 3 40gb model,Yellow light of death.

This happened on Christmas day,and although the Unit is two years old and therefore out of warranty i firmly believe that it has packed up due to an inherant fault,we paid cash for the unit and i know there is the sale of goods act that says that even though it is out of warranty we can still do something about it.

My problem is that the unit was purchased from Zavvi, which has now closed down due to Liquidation/Bankruptcy,i know that Sony are not very forthcoming in giving replacements without the need to hand over over £100.00,so my question to you all is

Am i up a creek without a paddle.

    Thankyou all.

hi,i did see a post on here with the ps3 help line number -08705 998877
i rang, because there was a rumour that sony are exchanging old ps3 consoles with the fault of yellow light syndrome, but i rang the number and they tell me they are not,and if i pay £131,they will send me a refurb one,so sony are not sticking with that decision.they also told me to try and sort it out with the retailer who sold me the unit??????????
are all ps3 consoles designed to last just 2 years????
