  • Another NSD today. I was tempted to buy some swede for a recipe and then realised that I could make my recipe (Sliced potato, leek and swede bake), by substituting some onions that need eating up.

Have the heating on 20 instead of 21-22 even though it's snowing and have lots of warm layers on.

Looking forward to watching 'Ration-book Britain' or whatever it's called, on Friday. I hope it's as good as the film 'Housewife, 49' with Victoria Wood. That was brilliant!

As we still have a rented car for a couple of days and for a much needed change of scenery we have just been to...S*insbury's!

I have spent £23.26 but came away with quite a lot of useful stuff. What I still haven't done is planned what I'm going to do to make sure it all gets used - I MUST meal plan.

We'll get another T*sco or A*da delivery next Tuesday so I'm going to try to spend as little as possible 'til then. In fact I'm allowing myself £15 grocery spends 'til next Tuesday - in cash in a little purse - I have to do better!

Will update sig now and wait for the snow to reach us. There was a very red sky this morning!
August Shopping Challenge. 26/8. Budget £250 Spent £256.81.. £6.81 over. So £0.00 a day left.

Carrieon - I use the inventory the same as Elf but I also use it to keep track of what we use the most of and what needs eating cos its been there ages, I have 1 large freezer & 1 small freezer in the kitchen and 2 small ones in the garage so I use the garage ones for bulk buying and then feed the freezers in the kitchen from them [hope that makes sense] I also keep a seperate section for kiddies stuff i.e. ice lollies, chicken nuggets and try and split the drawers so that each drawer contains the same type of stuff e.g. 1 drawer for chicken, 1 drawer for fish and so on. It also helps meal plan and then if I'm stuck for something to do the list helps me concentrate hehe.

Budgets all noted up to and including New Leaf

Orkney Star - you can still post your budget if you want to and add it to your siggy so you can keep track of it and if you remind me I'll update the front page at the start of the month with your carried over budget

Right off to update bits now

    Helen

    Sorry nearly forgot

Only managed to have 1 NSD so far, but today is looking promising! Not going anywhere in this snow!

DS2's school has closed, but not sure when his bus will get him back!! It's "only" 12 miles away, but most of it is along windy roads betweeen lots of little villages. We are the last on the route, so will just have to wait and see. Wish DS2 will use his phone more!!

DH took DS2 to rugby camp at the weekend in Sheffield, glad they didn't have it quite as bad as today then! So both days were spending days, if only small ones.

So £46.81 spend so far. Won't need very much this week, hopefully. If both DSs are home though, I can see more baking needing to be done!

Off to get another pot of soup made...that will warm everyone up!

  • Went to Mr. T. yesterday, it was crazy, so busy you would think they were giving the food away free.

Maybe everyone is stocking up while they can before the big freeze hits and no-one can get to the shops?

  • Hi all, I am sitting here covered in a warm blanket watching the weather come in from the West. I switch the heating off in the middle of the day, usually our house stays warm, but I think the constant freezing temperatures are testing it. :o

Well so far I have had 5 NSD days for food - however I still have a milkman who comes every other day - he was great and even managed on the worst snow day. :j Really don't want to drop him as he is a vital service for most of the elderly in the village, even though the milk is more expensive. I worked out that it costs me at least £2 in petrol and parking to get to my nearest town to park, so popping out for milk is not an easy option.

Went to see my parents yesterday with the children (back to school today, probably off tomorrow due to snow ); we tried to do a Lidl shop but ran out of time!

So I have my own personal store cupboard challenge; we still have turkey meat and a little ham but my concern is the huge pot of creme fraiche - could I add that to a sauce with say onions as a pie filling?

Or any thoughts on anything else I could do with it - it does say "do not freeze" on the tub - any ideas gratefully received.

cold cuts of meat with duphanious potatoes, not sure how its spelt! layer potatoes and onions (and thyme if you have it) in a dish, with the creme fraish, salt and pepper, and bake. to stop the cream boiling over you can stand your casserole in a roasting tin filled with water, i don't tend to bother though. the other way i make it is with parboiled pots (if doing roast for too many to do just roast pots for) i put as many roast pots in the roasting pan and any left over get put in a casserole with cream and onions and baked.
