January 2010 Grocery Challenge

  • My first grocery spend was yesterday in Sainsbury's £11.06.

It included ham and cheese for sandwiches, gluten free crispbreads and Nescafe Skinny Mocha Sachets (box with 8 sachets) £2.28. I'm saving money as it is cheaper than my £2.70 a cup Starbucks habit. For £2.28 I get 8 cups!

They also had some rather nice "Look What We Found!" Gloucestershire Old Spot Pork Meatballs with Butter Beans in a rich Tomato Sauce (Gluten Free) and also A Cumbrian Lamb Hotpot (Gluten Free) for £1.24 each. They normally cost a lot more, and they are kept in a pouch and do not need to be refridgerated which is great because I can keep these in my locker at work for when I'm on call at the hospital am starving and there's no food to eat, so it'll save me money and feed me lol.

    Cheers

  • Hi everyone,

I didn't join in for November or December, although I tried unofficially at home.My challenge for 2010 is not spending my own wage at all if I can, so to that end, and with a relatively full fridge, freezer and cupboards, can I please be put down for £150 for January please?

Thanks for starting the thread, pink!

Lasagne on the menu for tonight, trouble is there is no bolognese in the freezer:eek:

So I've made it with chilli cos there is tons of that - should be interesting:rotfl:

Another NSD today, £1.17 spent so far and nothing to buy really, may go to shop tomorrow and see what is reduced but if I buy anything it will only increase the stockpile as I have such a lot of food in.

    And another 4 day weekend:D

Hope all are well, back tomorrow to report if I managed to keep my purse zipped up!!
  • my january spending started at 12 noon today, i've justified this as the things i bought won't be used or consumed til january...;)

    in mr t i bought,
half price small (20 load) bottles of persil non bio, i've used this for years cos i had exzema, but may try the asda non-bio soon as i saw it recommended on here.
    i got 2 for 1 maltloaf (dd's favourite)
and two joints reduced to half price.
and two bottles of shloer (again dd's favourite so may bring that out for her birthday celebrations).

    my targets again this month,

    1. to use up what is in the cupboards and freezer (and was there when i joined this site in november), finding this quite a challenge but it is making me think very hard before i buy anything else 'just in case' or 'because it's a bargain'.

    2. to menu plan so i use up food which is in the already full two freezers in the house.

    3. only buy what i need today, or things which are cheaper than usual and will be used later.

good luck everyone on the challenge :happyhear

Hi Everyone and a Happy New Year.
Please can you put me down for £130.00 for Jan. Sorry not posted much, just moved house so things have been quite stressful but thanks to my saving a £1 a day in a sealed tin it has not been as expensive as it could have. Its paid for phone connection, new bathroom stuff and new bedding and pillows. Will start saving again now for next Christmas. Hope you all have a good year, I am going to make a concerted effort to save money and lose weight (lots of it):A

Remembered to take lunch today - leftovers (pate with salad and a mince pie:)) Spent 3.78 in Heron - pasta 49p, 4pk HP beans £1.25, 2 ltr milk £1 and bread rolls £1.04. Did quite well. Been putting off a proper shop but will have to go tomorrow, need cat food amongst other things and the shops'll be shut on Fri. Think I'll nip out to Aldi in my lunch break (it's only round the corner).

Made burgers for tea tonight - added oats and grated carrots too, was actually very nice so will try that again - definitely made it go much further, managed to get 6 good sized burgers instead of 4 from my 1lb of mince.

    Will update sig now x

  • Hi,

I was wondering if you could put me down for 60£ for 1 person a month. This is to include toiletries/cleaning products and lunches for work. I'm giving myself a separate allowance of £5 a week for coffee/lunch in work. So I'll need to factor in packed lunches and got a brand new flask from Santa for stews!

    Tks..

Not done this before and I don't have much idea what I usually spend...going to go for £400 for January and I should be able to come in under that...usually I set myself unachievable targets and get depressed when I cant do it!
Our budget covers 2 adults, 1 starving teenager and a 9yr old with food allergies and phobias and on a hi-carb/fat low fibre diet. And a small but energetic dog. And two cats, one on a fat-pet-special-diet and two kittens who seem to think they might starve if they don't eat every 20 minutes. Also cleaning stuff and packed lunches for DH and DS2. DS1 and I have lunch at home. I'm trying to cook more from scratch and less from packets but have set myself a target to do it just twice a week in January.
Will keep all my receipts and stuff this month so I can get an idea for February.
    Best wishes all xxx

  • Evening all,

nsd today, at least out of my GC money anyway, used some money my mil gave me for xmas to get dd a few more bits for her first birthday party today. Was a lovely sight but im shattered having dealt with so many kids running round and doing so much food prep for us oldies to munch on!

I need bread and milk tommorrow for over the bank holiday, we get through tons of milk.

I have meal planned as far as 10th Jan, as i start a new job on the 4th jan and i dont have my shifts past then. Yay a full time wage to play with at the end of Jan, roll on (well almost a full time wage bar a few days as i start on the 4th! Gotta be better than JSA though!)

So im all meal planned, have had a rifle through the freezer and have enough in just one drawer of my upright for about eight meals for us both, from whats in there! So i could probably manage ages just on my stores in freezers and cupboard.

What i do need though is a kick up the bum to make my bread, but time always seems to run away and by time dd is in bed its too late.

    Ho hum, such is life.

    Happy moneysaving!
