WElcome to the thread freudian. Look forward to seeing your pencil case. Zips arent difficult, they just look more difficult than they are. Are you making a lined one? If yes have a look at this if your zip isnt long enough

you basically just need to make a sandwich with your material. Just thinking that if you use a magnetic snap or button fastening all the stuff in the pencil case might fall out the ends! :)

hmmmm yeah. I wonder about a pencil case wrap? I literally can put a needle in and out of the cloth but I'm desperate to learn so I can survive on charity shop finds but make them original and funky for my clothes.

Do you have a machine or just doing hand sewing? If you have a machine then a crayon roll is definately a good one to start with. A tote bag is another one that really good. If you check out the morsebag site there is a tutorial on there for a simple bag which is another good beginners one.

I am just hand sewing. I don't have a machine but would really like one.

Oh I like the morsebag! Thank you. I'm reluctant as I have some lovely Kath Cidston fabric squares from ebay and don't want to ruin them! I regularly use my free council cloth bags to the local store so a morsebag would would be lush! thanks again. :)

Hmo - that bag is gorgeous, well done, was the sequin fabric easy to sew? I tried sewing on sequin fabric once and it kept cutting the thread as I was going along.

Sent the link of the tie bag to my Mum, and have had a message via MSN, that she has 17 ties for me! Dad is glad to be rid of them. So my next port of call to my Mum and Dad will be yet another carrier bag of things coming my way! I dont think I ever go there without coming home with something! My place will be full soon. (No it already is really!).
Want to sew just now, but with DGD about its not such an option with the machine being upstairs. Also with this good weather I think the garden needs the attention, but i have had to stop, dont want to over do it all in one go. The work is really a bit much for an old crock like me, but someone has to do it.!
Cup of tea time at the moment though. Then it will be lunch time.....
Perhaps I can at least plan a bit more of my sewing, maybe I could bring DGD's outfit down to pin out.? on the dining table.

Freudianslip, keep an eye out on your local Freegle, or freecycle site, and also try local Gumtree.
Where abouts in the country are you? Maybe your near one of us, and could get some more hands on help.
If your any where near me down here in Brackley I would gladly give you a hand. You could practise on one of my machines to see if you like it. !

lol I can't do it! I can't fathom which way to stitch the hemmings etc. I'm going to put a zip in. Need to try to find one online as can't get to the shops till next week.

Ho hum, nothing is ever easy and simple - or cheap!

I'm no where near you Mooloo but thank you. I have found a really basic sewing machine in John Lewis (of all places!) for around £70 so I have my eye on that as a starter.

I have some old eyelet curtains from my mother in law that would go fab in my bedroom but need converting to pencil pleat tops. I've so much to be getting on with in my head but practically or machine wise, I'm just not ready to do.

Thanks for the friendly welcome too. A lovely thread :)

What is closed end zips? Would that be what I would need for the pencil case? Also could I use them for making small scatter cushions too? There a pack of 5 (6 inches) on ebay for 99p. Sound about the right thing I need?

Yes closed end zips are fine for both. Open end zips are the ones you get up the front of a jacket or similar where you feed one side into the other to "do up" your jacket. Closed end zips do not open at the bottom when you pull the zipper down, Rufus xx

Welcome to the sewing crazy home :D

the closed end zips are normal zips so the one you are looking at on ebay should be ok :D I usually buy 7-or 8inch ones and like you I was terrified of putting zips in at 1st but I used the link Pootle gave you and have not looked back :D

Better put than me Rufus lol :)

Mooloo :DIm so pleased to hear you are better :D I have only got 2 more days (not counting today) to go and Im getting so excited I will be able to sew again :j

hmo :D LOVE the bag :T

Kazz :Dthe dress (and your DD) is beautiful :T
Hope everyone is having a great day :D
