I will be having the picture framed for display in my living room. The colours and the detail are amazing - thank you Penni!

The pic's are beautiful :D Pennib is so clever :D I love her work :D

ISOM, I cut my hexagons by hand too, I use my cutter for squares though as I get a better edge :D but I have not been able to use it as the scare on my hand is at the bottom of my thumb just where you press to cut with the rotary cutter and untill now it has been a bit sore :(
I still am unsure what to make next :o
Getting myself sorted 1 day/1thing at a time :) and Love sewing :)

Wow what a gorgeous picture, and well done to pennib, its really fantastic, I love all the colours.

Thanks Pootle, leg is a bit better this morning, I have managed to cut out a top and some shorts for GDD so am going to go and make a start on them now I have had my breakfast. I have updated my blog with a pic of the skirt I did yesterday and some more pics of the denim quilt with yoyos attached. The pictures still look a bit dark but I am pleased with it now and have finally put it away until Christmas.

Annie, you must be thrilled with that. It is stunning, love the colours and the detail, I would never have though of putting some of those fabrics together but they all work so well. Pennib, I think you must be the most talented fabricy crafty person ever!

Hi all sorry to "gatecrash". I have been reading this forum for just over a week now having stumbled here from Cross Stitch cafe.

When my mum died I inherited her craft supplies and have 9 fat quarters. I thought about making a bag but decided that a quilt would be more fitting as this could be passed down to my son. I have added another 3 fat quarters so now have 12 and I'm about to embark on my first quilt. Think I may need to add extra fabric - need to work out measurements.

As I am a complete novice (I did a bit of patcwork at school many years ago but all I do in the way of sewing now is curtains) I thought I should use squares. I am a little confused as to how it's best to start. Here's my plan:

    Wash fabric, dry and iron.
Cut squares - thinking of using 5.5 squares using 9 to make an large square.
Sew 9 individual squares together with a 1/4inch seam allowance.
Sew the large squares together 3 x 4.
make a sandwich of patchwork, wadding and backing material and baste together.
Quilt the "sandwich" and then add a binding.

Does the above seem reasonable? Should I be cutting individual squares or long pieces and sewing two of these together before then cutting into individual pieces? Also, is it okay to cut out with scissors? I've read such a lot about using a rotary cutter but they seem expensive if this is the only thing I'm likely to do.

Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

sorry ailsb crossed posts! I did a how to on a quilt a while ago and a linky here to good site for step by step

in terms of rotary cutter wouldnt bother unless you get hooked as you need a cutter and board and large ones will cost £50 for both! Best to wash and iron fabric if you dont know its 100% cotton; if you can use 100% cotton thread as nylon/cotton mix can break down as the stronger nylon rubs the cotton - that way your quilt will last years! Find a pattern you like (lots of delicious patterns here http://www.modabakeshop.com/) and all over the web and then go for it but accept from the start that it will take a while! Keep us posted! :)

Thanks for this. I will spend many happy hours reading. I'm about to get some more fabric that I've seen from Doughty's so can't do anything until I get this. Will wash and iron the other fabric in the meantime.

    Thanks again.:)
