    Hi everyone :D

I got my headingtape from charity shops, the one I go to has a little box tucked on the back shelf with sewing stuff and I managed to get 5m for 50p. Also another thing I do is buy cheap curtains off carboots/charity shops and unpick the tape off the top.
Ebay is a good place too :D

Im going to put some of my squares together today and start some of my quilts ready for xmas prezzies :D so might be back later :D
Getting myself sorted 1 day/1thing at a time :) and Love sewing :)

    Hi Everyone.

I am going to try and read up on as much of this thread as I can and get some ideas and tips (241 pages is going to take me a lot of time !!!) I have just got home after buying my first ever sewing machine. I have no idea how to use it, I have never sewn anything in my life!

We decided to make our own curtains to go between the kitchen and the conservatory as its freezing out there in the winter. When I priced up some curtains the price came in between £100 - £120 and as it was only a temporary measure I have decide to make them myself! Am I mad for trying to do this with no experience? My husband has had a bit of experience on sewing machines so maybe we will try and do it together.

I just have these ideas that I could make so much nice stuff but I imagine its going to be a big learnign curve! Looking forward to reading and seeing all of the beautiful things that everone is making :D:D

    Hi & welcome :)

It's lovely in here, come in and have a cuppa!

I would have thought that a beginniner would be able to do curtains. It's only straight lines for seams, adding a lining if you want it, and attaching the header tape.

The first thing I ever made was a cushion - again just straight lines.

I reckon if you measure it all carefully when you start, do all your preparation carefully - pinning, tacking etc, and sew slowing they'll be fine.

search on the internet if you need help, oh, and do one at a time, so if the worst happens, you've only faffed up one piece of material.

Post pics when you're done, and tell us how proud you are of your achievement! xx

Silly really after seeing all your makes, but this is what I've made for a friend. Her daughter has brain damage and at 31 has the mental age of 3 and loves Postman Pat.
Not entirely happy with it, but .........

  • Here's pics of my wedding outfit. Like I said earlier I didn't make the dress only took it in and added a band at the bottom. The fabric I got for the wrap was way too wide but not long enough so I cut it in half lengthways then added an extra foot to the ends and covered the seams with a band of the blue satin.

I forgot to take a photo of the scented heart.
  • That Postman Pat is great!
Love your dress Georgia (those colours are lovely).
Sue, I found ebay to be the cheapest for both feet (have ordered my side cutter yet but will get it next week from ebay.)]

I havent done any sewing this week but my patterns arrived from America so am going to start making these shortly for some Xmas presents. (I got the rabbit and the dog and cat - they are well cute!!)

Also want to make the cat that Cuddles posted but not got heavy enough fabric yet. Oh, and also bought 3 tilda books and have fallen in love with half the stuff from them!!! ....the list goes on....
  • Does anyone know how to sew on "sticky" fabric... my poor little machine keeps going up and down on the spot - I fear I may burn the motor out..

I picked out this lovely leatherette stuff for the bottom of my latest bag, but I can't sew on it... 'elp!!! x
