Anyone give advice about setting tension on a Brother sewing machine. Its my dd`s , she lives in germany and can`t get the tension set. She used the machine to sew linen outfits before christmas but now she says the tension keeps slipping whenever she tries to set it up .
Its a XL 3510 model, don`t know whether they sold over here or not lol0 -

Nuttywoman - sorry I am not much help here but I have a Brother and when the tension goes a bit wobbly I take all the bobbin bits out and clean and replace them, re-thread it and faff with the tension dial and sew some scraps until I get it right.
Hart - Im looking forward to seeing your drawers (omg that sounds wrong:eek: but you know what I mean :rotfl:) I am not suprised you have not had time for sewing, I would love a trip to Alton Towers with the boys but it's such a long way from up here.
I have been ebaying and painting stuff today as my son is a little under the weather so I had to take an impromptu day off work, and don't want to annoy him with my clickety clacking with the sewing machine! You can stand there and agonize........

Dinah was that skirt a simplicity pattern? I bought a pattern today that looks very similair
Pootle you could always face the neckline and sleeve openings by cutting an inch wide strip in the same shape as your pattern pieces , attach lightweight facing sew right sides together on the openings turn through to the wrong side and then topstitch around the edges
love the heart and bags kandi*****

Hey all.
I found a really cheap rotary mat today in Rymans- not sure if it was priced up wrong but it was around £7-£8 for an 18x24 mat which I thought was rather good- not sure if the measurements (all in cms) are accurate but I read somewhere that you should never use the measurements on the mats anyway as they are printed by machines so might not be accurate- ( you should always go by the quilters ruler instead, apparently, iv been reading quilting for dummies by the way!) anyway, just thought it was worth a mention.
I have a few more makes to show you. The first one was inspired by the girls sketchers trainers I found on the dolcis website, I thought, since I have been making my 4 year old so many skirts that my 1 year old was a little left of so I bought some shoes off ebay and graffitied them up for him! My little girl loved them so it looks like I will have to do hers aswell.
Righto!- off to catch up on the last few days' posts!
Tie side skirt
Long dress- I want your opinions on this, do you think its to low at the front, should i take the straps up? also, the back are the straps to close together?, I wasnt really sure where to put these on the dress, are they supposed to be wider apart?
button and thread bags from sew pretty homestyle book (just whipped these up as an after thought as was sick of all my buttons and thread cluttering up my sewing box)0 -
danables you have been busy, those shoes are amazing. I love your tilda makes too. That little dress ~ I would probably shorten the straps a touch if you want my honest opinion, or wear it with a little t-shirt underneath. It is beautiful though! You can stand there and agonize........

Its worth looking at the tension coming from the bobbin too! On the bobbin housing is a small screw, this should be adjusted so the cotton doesn't come out too easy nor too hard.
edit: - I've just had a google and found the manual, and it looks like the bobbin doesn't have a housing like mine. Have a look here as it may help...

Other things to check: The needle is in the right way around. The bobbin is in the right way around.

You've made some lovely things Danables. Is that machine embroidery on the bags?
What did you use for the griffiti?
IIRC a while back someone mentioned a peg bag that they were thinking of making which had a washing line of clothes on the front. I can't remember who it was but if you're still around (it might have been right at the beginning of the thread) have you got a link for it? Thanks0 -
Thanks Kandipandi- I always prefer honest opinions. Iv had another look at the dress but I dont think they will go any higher without the band digging in to her armpits which is a shame, not sure what else I can do about that?!.
nuttywoman I have a brother machine and i find it depends on your fabric as to what tension you need but for cottons I have mine set to about 4, and it seems to work for me, but again, its only by adjusting it and sewing scraps that I can work out what the right setting is. My manual also says you need to use the right needle for the right fabric, so have a look at that too.
Thnaks Georgiabay, no, its hand embriodery- just copied the pattern onto tissue paper and pinned it to the front on the fabric then used water spray to remove it after id stiched over it. I used acrylic paints for the graffitti- and as an added bonus I didnt realise that they glow in the dark!0
