    Oh gorgeous Tea towels.
Cute skirt and neat zip Dizzy.
Why do you need a special foot for a zip?

I went into Wilko's today and brought these t-towels for £1.99 for 3 and some wrapping paper for 79p.
Im going to cover some plain magazine holders with the wrapping paper and not sure what the towels will be yet but they just look so pretty :D

I have these - they are my favourite at the minute! Beware if you wash them (the towelling ones) the bits go all over your other stuff, and the lounge carpet and your black trouseers just before you leave the house!!! You get the picture :D

You need it as you need to stitch close to the zip teeth so that it looks right and closes right and you cant do that with an ordinary foot, well I dare say you can but it is soooo much easier with a zip foot.

eta. Have a quick look on youtube for sewing a zip by machine and you will see what I mean - I am not the best at explaining things.

I'm sure I read on here that someone when making open topped bags with a lining likes to make the outside fabric go so far down inside instead of having the lining showing at the top. I've been looking for hours and can't find it.
Have I imagined it? If not can someone tell me if this can be done to any bag?
    TIA
  • It was me! I think you can do it to quite a few bags but you have to think about the consruction. This is the simplest way. Make the bag in the outer fabric and turn in the facing plus seam allowance at the top Press. Cut the handles a little longer than normal. (they will need cover the depth of the facing plus seam allowance). Place the handles in position with the end of the handle at the bottom of the facing. Stitch in place. Topstitch the upper edge of bag. You need to cut the lining a little shorter but make in the normal way. Turn in seam allownce at top edge. Press. Slipstitch in place in bag. I like to use this method becauseI can stitch the corners of the base of the ling to the corners of the base of the bag so the lining remains in place.

Once you have made one like this try it wih your normal construction method cutting the lining short by the depth of the facing. Then you can stitch the bags together at the top leaving a gap to turn.

    Hope that helps

    Some great links.
I love the tutorial for the covered end of zips. Must give that a try and the links for the bags is cool. I want to make some of these
I've just finished these for a swap.

I hate jersey. It doesn't move like anything else. It hated the first 3 spools of thread I tried to use, just garbled them and sent them back all oily and beardy. I eventually found a thread fine enough to use, but it still just decides sewing in straight lines isn't on, its near impossible to unpick the damned stuff, even cutting it is a nightmare. I miss cotton.

    Sorry, rant over.

Im with you on that one Dinah :rotfl: I hated it when I did my jacket and vowed never to use it again.

I tacked all the peices and went very slow with the machine and held it a bit tighter than I would with cotton fabric oh and used a zig zag stitch.

Take a deep breath and keep your chin up, you CAN do it :rotfl:
