Try your local fabric shop or market and as if you can buy up ends of rolls and scraps!! I bought some patchwork squares off e-bay and I am making them into hearts and birds for Valentines day...... Sorry, meant to say that curtain fabric makes fabulous shopping 'totes' or simple bags, plenty of free patterns on the internet, just google.....

Thank you pinkdebster for your quick reply this too is a two hour course aimed at beginners (like me) who don't know too much about sewing. I have been looking for a course for ages but have put it off through lack of confidence I guess but feel the time is right it being a new year and all and if I don't do it now I don't think I ever will and the machine will sit there for another year unused.

Good luck with your next course.

youtube has loads of great videos on just about making anything. think of something and search for it, watch as many as you can to familiarise yourself then just have a go, at the end of the day if it doesn't work out its only fabric and you can start again, and each time you do something you will learn a little more.

use old cotton scraps to practise on or if you don't have anything calico is a good price and nice to sew so should help you practice.

    this is my make today.

Hey ladies, I would like to get a sewing machine, I used one at school years ago but that's about it :) but I would love to make bits and pieces, shorten curtains etc, where's the best place to get started? And could anyone recommend a machine? there's a crafty place near me that has a course on how to start using juki machines, are they any good? Many thanks if you can help ladies

    welcome
I think I know where you mean ;) i've tried to book onto several courses there & so far none of them have run due to lack of numbers :( i'm desperately awaiting a new date for their overlocker course. I got myself a janome machine rebranded as J0hn Lewis about 10/12 years ago which is still going strong & doing everything I throw at it :)
    - Mortgage: 1st one down, 2nd also busted
    - Student Loan gone
Swagbucks, Mingle, GiffGaff, Prolific, Qmee & Quidco; thank you MSE every little bit helps

Hi all. Not been on here for ages. Since I was last on here I now have 2 sewing machines. An overlocker and an ordinary machine. I have not used the overlocker as yet, however I have in the past made some cushion covers, an apron, a monster, several rabbits, knickers and other bits and pieces. I haven't had any sewing lessons since school. (Many years ago). Please can someone give me some pointers as I am keen to make some clothes but I'm very lacking in confidence as to my abilities. :o
    Thanks In advance.

Also where is the cheapest place to buy material? Everywhere I have looked is costs around £10 a metre

Have you an Abhakan Fabric shop nearby - they also have demonstration days, for ideas. Also, Dunelm Mill sell fabric, some is less than £10 per metre.
  • Try Craftsy for courses. There are some free ones and the are great to follow.:)

    Hi everyone

i havent been on here for ages either lol, I have not been receiving the notifications and forget all about it what with everything else going on.

I have made four dresses and three skirts for myself over the last few weeks. they are all thicker jersey fabrics, I got three large sacks full ages ago for about £2 off ebay and never used any of it really so thought I would see what I could get out of it.

Not started on my shop bits yet as trying to get these clothes sorted first. I have a few other bits to sort out, things I want to make smaller or such before I start making new stock. OH is on nights for a week so might have to bring the machine down later and have it in the dining room so I dont get too bored.

Hope you are all ok xx

Thats gorgeous fabric HMO, and the cover has come up lovey. I made something similar for my Kindle Fire but its hard to make them to sell on the stall as there are so many different sizes for everything these days. its like phone cases, I used to sell them but now the phones are all different sizes and people moan theirs dont fit etc. Cant do all the sizes to fit.

Ok so I [STRIKE]stupidly[/STRIKE] impulsively bought a large bag of fabric pieces today from a curtain fabric shop. £5
Now I need ideas of stuff to make with it. Some of the pieces are good sizes so I might get some cushion covers, bolster cushion covers out of some of it.
Some of the smaller pieces will be good for patchwork-not sure what yet.
A few of the pieces are like lining fabric.
Some of the pieces are the same fabrics.
    Total weight is 3.2kg
    Any ideas welcome. TIA :)
