I've wanted a sewing machine for ages (despite not having a clue how to use one) and treated myself to one for my birthday : )
Its a reconditioned brother one.

So far I have only taken it out of the box! I plan to do lots of practice sewing straight lines and around shapes before I contemplate buying material or making anything. I was going to use some old pillowcases. Would that be okay to use?
I am completely clueless and looking at project ideas is making my head spin a bit to be honest!0 -

The cases are lovely hmo. My sister gave me her old kindle recently - I should probably make a cover for that as she kept the cover for her new one. I'm sure I'll get around to it one day...!Finally bought a homeStarting mortgage £289,500 31.01.19 - Current outstanding £189,497.12Overpayments since 27.03.19: £53,964.80Moving fund so far £2500 - Premium bonds £9,5000

Hi
I have decided it is time that I learnt to sew (have had a sewing machine for years and have only every used it to shorten curtains :embarasse). I have seen a short course at a college a few miles away and think I might give it a go in the hope that I can learn how to make the most from my machine.
There are so many things I would love to make but the course is only 10 weeks and I really want to make the most of it but I don't know where to begin so I wondered if any of you lovely ladies that sew could give me a few tips of where to begin. I would love to make all the crafty things you all make but don't feel I have the skills just yet so would be happy to start small.
I did thinks of making things like:
cushions
draught excluders
napkins
aprons
door stops
and anything else crafty.
Also where is the cheapest place to buy material? Everywhere I have looked is costs around £10 a metre - the college info says we will only be using a metre of fabric (I only just saw the course on line so don't have all the info yet, sorry)
Thank you all for your helpStash Busting Challenge 2016 6/520 -
I recently did an 8 week course at a local college - I had never sewn before this course. I had a new machine for my birthday earlier in the year but had been to scared to take it out of the box!!
During the 8 weeks, we covered a lot of things. The first week was just getting to know the machine and learning to thread it - we also started to sew in straight lines and learnt to turn corners (it was a two hour session each week).
We then went on to make a reversible bag. I have subsequently made another of these at home for my daughter for Christmas!! We learnt applique and used this to make a cushion cover. We then learnt to put a zip in said cushion cover.
From here, we went on to learning how to use a pattern and made an article of clothing - mine was a simple A-line skirt.
Since the course finished, I have gone on to make some pyjama bottoms with another simple sewing pattern and have also made some more cushion covers. I feel I could now go on to make some simple homemade items - the first being a sewing machine cover.
I hope you get as much out of your course as I did - I have signed up now for a follow-one course which starts in February.
Good luck xx0 -
Thank you pinkdebster for your quick reply this too is a two hour course aimed at beginners (like me) who don't know too much about sewing. I have been looking for a course for ages but have put it off through lack of confidence I guess but feel the time is right it being a new year and all and if I don't do it now I don't think I ever will and the machine will sit there for another year unused.
Good luck with your next course.Stash Busting Challenge 2016 6/520
