  • I'd just like to thank whoever it was who suggested Fabric land - i visited today and purchased some red fabric with stars, black with swallows and a pretty flowery pattern. Then went to ikea and brought some more so I've got quite a bit to keep my busy!

My overlocker is some 20 years old now. Its a janome one.
But I cannot tell you what a new one would be. I would go and have a look at J Lewis or similar that sell and have demonstrations of thier machines.
I have used mine for everything from Wedding dresses and fine work, to heavy duty seams on denims. The only thing is that I have had to replace the blade 2 times thats all!.

From what I can see with quilting is that there is no real hard and fast rules, and that anything goes. Some people use wadding to pad, some use a fleece batting, and some even use an old blanket.
On the reverse it depends if you want a double sided quilt or if you want it to be just plain. If its a scrappy quilt the its up to you really.
Depends on the fabric that I have, that dictates what I do!.

Hi I am looking for some advice. I have a Brother ES2200 sewing machine purchased in 2006 from a company I would rather not name but it has featured on a consumer program recently. It had a ten year warranty but I have had conflicting advice from them on the two occasions I contacted them about a repair and I have got to the stage where I have no faith in them. The problem is that the bobbin case moves sometimes when I am using the machine resulting in broken needles. I love the machine and I phoned another repair company and was advised that owing to the cost of a new bobbin case (£50) is was not worth repairing. I searched on the internet last night and another company would not provide its telephone number or address, the only contact being by email. I am rathersuspicious about this. Has anyone had similar problems with their machine and have they found it cost effective to have it repaired?

have you got your receipt or a piece of paper stating the 10 yr warranty. I know the man used to always say about the 10yr warranty whenever he was on create and craft/ ideal world. if so

from what i remember you had to package it up in a box and send it back to them I suggest recorded delivery and they should fix it under the warranty.

i bought a brother from this company online about 2yrs ago and its been fab and i haven't had any cause to contact them (touching wood) as i type my 10 yr warranty is mentioned on my receipt from memory

I would think that they would be tackling thier customer services if its been on watchdog. They would need to rebuild thier status or the company could go out of business.
Fingers crossed that you sort the problem out.
I have no idea where any of my receipts were on my machines! Not even the newest one. I got from Create and Craft last Christmas. The Toyota Super Jeans. Its OK for the sewing on the jeans straight stitch etc. But I cannot alter the tensions or the stitch lengths which really does limit things a bit.
I have taken to having to have two sewing machines up. Which is not really that good. So am afraid I would not recommend it as an only machine!.
Right time to do the school run. Last night I sat covering my shapes with fabric while watching the TV. So if I get a few minutes I have a few more of them to do later today.

Thank you for your replies, I do have the invoice for the machine and had provided them with a copy. After being ignored I emailed them not realising that they would feature on the program that evening. After reading reviews about the company I am not sure about providing them with my card details so if I am not prepared to take the risk I will just accept my losses, smile sweetly at my husband and hopefully get a new machine soon

Good luck in getting this sorted out. Its such a nuisance. But there are plenty of good machines out there!.

I lurk on this thread and saw this, I don't know what type of items you sew but I sew my own clothes and pretty much all of my fabric comes from Fabric Land! They have such a wide selection and I'd say that most of what I buy seems as good quality as in any high street clothing garments. I particularly like the crepes, georgette, lace and suiting/tweed/boucle/coating fabrics they offer and have made some lovely garments out of these. In terms of cotton and polycotton, they seem to have a wide selection and it seems to be the quality that you would expect for £3/4 a metre. Obviously it probably doesn't compare to the types of print that you can get for £15 a metre but I suppose it's all down to what you're after!

I think if you're after amazing quality silk/satins then they're probably not the place to look but for general fabrics for clothing or other sewing projects then I think they're well worth a look as the quality seems comparable to other fabric shops in my area but the prices are cheaper. Then again I tend to only buy cheaper fabrics as I'm a student!

Thanks for the advice on Fabric Land. I think I may have to order a few bits, just got to time it so it will arrive when my other half will be at work and I can just merge it into my stash - "No, this isn't new, it's been in the box for ages!" :D

I'm still a beginner really, so while I could look at the expensive £15 per metre fabrics for hours and drool over them all, I couldn't bare to cut them up until I'm confident that I wouldn't make a dogs dinner of it. So the cheaper stuff, which is still pretty, is Perfect for me :D
