Dizzy lizzie; I bet you wont be able to prise yourself away from you new toy now. Looking forward to seeing your makes. I've been looking at new machines and didn't know that
Dunelm sold them. Does yours have a lot of embroidery stitches
    ?

Hi pennib. I think they had 3 of their own makes and the Janome one.
I went for the Janome because it had a buttonhole stitch to it as well and thought I might as well pay a bit extra and get the one with more features.
There are some embroidery stitches on...
    it's this make Janome DE1800
I spent last night looking at y*utube tutorials especially 'TheCraftyGemini' Her site is geared for new beginners. I learnt how to make envelope cushion covers on her site. She explains everything so simply.
I went back to du*elm today and bought a little folding table to put it on as I think I'll be doing a lot of sewing in our bedroom.
Just finishing off my brew then I'm off upstairs to make my cushion covers...I'll be posting pics as soon as they're done :D
If I can make things half as good as what everyone does on here I'll be a happy bunny :j

homealone; Please dont give up now. You need to take a deep breath and take one step at a time, it can be a bit daunting when you have a large piece of material in front of you. Can you practise on some scraps of material doing straight lines? Before you know it you will be zooming along! As rufus said there are loads of tutorials on youtube and have a look at the link that dizzylizzie has put.

Dizzy; wow you are speeding ahead!

Hi everyone. I'm still lurking around here. Busy making cards but am gradually teaching myself some sewing basics!
I ve just posted my first makes on my page and in the next couple of days I'll be posting my first projects with my interlocker which are refashions.
As a struggling newbie a big thanks to you all for your inspiration and help. There have been times when I'm on the verge of giving up but then I read this thread, take a break from it and get back to things with a calmer head!!

Please can I get some recommendations for a dressmaker/designer in these areas?

I am wanting a dress made to my own design for the end of June.

Also any ideas on what would average prices/timescales for getting a dress made - it's an evening-y type but not a big dress, in lace with an underdress.

Also any recommendations for where in these areas to get material - hoping for dark green/blue lace.

    Many thanks

hi, i too have a similar problem. i was bought a couple of cath kidson books where half the book is taken with patterns that am told i need to make bigger and copy. i have absolutely no idea how to do this. only started sewing a few weeks ago and was bought this to help me along. unfortunately most of the patterns are things you would make for a change but some thing like a spectacle case i might be abie to try, alos how can you copy on to a4 paper. can anyone help??

Go to a photocopy shop, they can copy at different ratios, enlarging or reducing. Our local post office does copying, worth a try trying yours.

Homealone, as the others say please don't give up! Try to do bits in little steps where you feel happy, break the bigger problems down into small chunks. If you are worried about wrecking the 'for best' fabric the try out a pattern on an old piece of bed sheet or cheap cotton first.
I've got a million & one projects sat on my spare bed waiting to be finished which i cant bear to look at so they are coming out one by one and being done little by little, lets tackle it together.
My task today is to cut & iron some interfacing for a top and then sew 2 panels together so that the yoke is complete & if I feel able I will try to do the waistband
    :)
    - Mortgage: 1st one down, 2nd also busted
    - Student Loan gone
Swagbucks, Mingle, GiffGaff, Prolific, Qmee & Quidco; thank you MSE every little bit helps

:j Well I've made my 4 cushion envelope cushion covers and sewn a hem on some blackout curtains!
I had to laugh though. On the 3rd cushion I'd pinned the hem to sew before I sewed it to the main front cushion but with pins still in and unsewn I just sewed the whole cushion together. And then I thought, what the 'beeeeeep' have I done? I think I was getting tired at this time so had to sew the hems on the envelope opening whilst it was sewn on to the front (iyswim)
I wanted to pop into du*elm today but didn't get a chance. My needle seems to be set to the left rather than dead straight in the middle and I'm sure I was told you can put the needle to the left if you're sewing zips??
I can't find in the instructions what I do to put the needle in the middle or is this how it should be?
Work tomorrow so must get to bed.
I'll post pics of cushions tomorrow :D
